The Oregon Trail was made in 1971 and sold 65 million copies
Super Mario Bros from 1985 sold 58,000,000
Sonic the Hedgehog from 1991 sold 40 million
Tetris on the game boy sold 35 million
people say the game industry has grown so how do modern games only sell a mil or two?

It's "grown" in the sense that there are exponentially more dev studios and available markets to sell to than ever before. But the problem with that is now the consumers are split between so many more products and they don't flock to any one particular one anymore. We've witnessed the death of the "killer app," the type of game that you HAVE to own if you play games on X/Y/Z platform.

Adjusted for inflation the industry hasn't grown as much as people like to pretend it has except in mobile gaming.

Reagan era inequality.
You either crack into the 1% by murdering and wearing the skin of a 1%er or you get sent back intro the trenches within 5 years of making a hit product.

The biggest PC gamers were never that relevant or popular.

People really underestimate just how much bigger Nintendo was even back in the 80's.

they all spent significant chunks of their savings on giant projects that flopped. Myst devs went all in on uru MMO, Romero with Ion Storm and Daikatana, and Wil Wright on Spore.

Except people are buying the Switch 2 just for one game. Try again.

"world population" doesn't buy PC or console games
"world population" does play free-to-play shit on mobile though

Will Wright spent $0 of his own money on Spore. That was all EA's money that got spent.
What he actually blew his wad on was, in all seriousness, a blockchain game called VoxVerse.
Never heard of it? Yeah, most people haven't. And cryptoshit is one of the better ways to burn money, especially in games.
It's kind of funny how often smart people end up being actually retarded.

The world having more poor people doesn't translate to more game sales. Even in the West people are getting poorer on average since all of the money has been trickling up since the 70s.

The oregon trail was sold to schools. Every fucking school had that on every computer.
