That one is true.
That reality is currently hitting movie/show streaming services. Now that the hype period is all but over and the flood of seemingly endless investor money has dried up, it has turned out that streaming service subscriptions are actually worse long term deal for studios than movie ticket and DVD sales used to be, but there is no going back to the old model anymore because the audience has been conditioned to prefer streaming.

Gamepass is just a retarded model, why pay $60 for a game you'll finish once when you can pay peanuts and play it AND other games?

Contrary to popular armchair analysis, companies are capable of multiple fuckups simultaneously. They have been pouring enormous amounts of money down the drain on gamepass hoping to put sony out of business and it's mostly just damaging studios and Microsoft's bottom line.
They've been setting fire to yet more money to buy studios to get all that sweet publishing money except they then pack them full of DEI hires and produce nothing.
Faced with a widening black hole of no money on the balance sheets they start flailing around for a solution and inevitably decide on layoffs which looks bad so they casually mention AI as if they have realised it's a solution to their problems which works on low knowledge investors.

>why pay $60 for a game you'll finish once when you can pay peanuts and play it AND other games?
That's the insidiousness of it. You are getting the great deal of cheap rentals for games you don't intend to play repeatedly, much like us oldfags did with blockbuster back in the day. But something that couldn't be done in the 90s but can now is MTX. I've said since the beginning of gamepass that the eventual outcome of this is that GP games will start to look more and more like live service trash as microsoft reduces the payment so much that to make money they have to sell you season passes and DLC. And then once you have paid for addons you are going to be even more reluctant to cancel your GP sub because then you'll lose all the stuff you "bought." Hell, that's what the EA sidecar service on GP is all about. Here's "access" to a bunch of games. Buy the DLC to get the full experience.
Like all these "too good to be true" services we see a typical pattern. Early days it's amazing with high quality games every month. Then they start to disappear faster, the quality of releases go down, they start to over rely on indies and microsoft studios stuff to make up the bulk. Price rises and service tiers inevitably follow.

>rentals KILLED video games in the 90s
It didn't kill them, but it hurt them. American versions of some games were made harder or more grindy to limit the number of people marathoning a rental over the weekend and not translating to a sale. It was the death of the short arcade experience too. All games had to become 20+ hour slogs or bullshit difficulty walls to defeat the demon rental customer.
Now we have other methods of doing that and they are much worse.

You mean wait until it's too late and every major release is live service? Great plan. Hell, I'd say for Microsoft studios it's already too late. Their bullshit has smelled for a LONG time. Enormous base cost + season passes, or shit rentals.

It is the curse of being publicly traded, they must always chase hypothetical money to please the sacred investors. Shareholders would never accept settling for money they already make, why on Earth would they invest on tech company that does not seek explosive perpetual growth? Aiming for the moon is the point of tech investment. If the shareholders want reliable and steady long term profits and stability they would have put their money on money market funds, US treasury and low risk corporate and government bonds, not on a tech company.

Streaming games were fine if they are Telltale-ish games. Lag doesn't matter in those.

They were comfy to play on my phone over streaming when out of home for some stupid shit, especially with a Backbone controller. If they got studios to produce more of those, people would play them over cloud.

so basically what ps plus, nso and a couple more publishers do?

it's realistically the more sense to do. Yes, one can argue that those doesn't give you all the AAA games day one and as a consumer why would you pay 60/70/80 dollars for a game when i could pay 15 dollars and get over with it. That's why so many 3rd worlders buy the suscription + regional pricing helps since it's even cheaper. But once you understand how much it actually hurts the studios and everything else around you start to wonder how are you gonna make those people to start buying games full price again if they want them day one. And also you realize how those publishers realize how much of a fuckup would do to go doing that game pass business model

What do you mean by that? Game Pass games are always base edition, always have been. I can open the Xbox app right now and buy DLC or MTX for any of the multiple games I don't own, I'll "own" the DLC on my Microsoft account but it'll be useless once I stop paying for Game Pass access.

hes right, why would microsoft care about the quality of games if they aren't selling them
its the same shit with netflix, once they realized that all their movies were doing is adding a number to the catalog number they just started pumping out slop
if microsoft doesnt care about sales, why would they care about quality or future releases? in fact, they have financial incentive for you to not play games

That Disney pass has been losing money for them since it started, they're trying to rope in users before upping the price.
Game pass is similar, Microsoft is losing big time with it, but they want user acquisition. They're a 2 trillion dollar corporation so they can eat the costs, but if they don't see things improving on long term projections, they will pull the plug on it.
I fucking hate Microsoft and Windows and will never use Gamepass.

The real problem is that good tardwranglers are very scarce for some reason. You'd think that there'd be a plethora of good managers out there but they seem very rare. Maybe managers nowadays are too afraid of getting involved because their job would be on the line if social media gets ahold of some 'crunch' or 'slave-driving' article? Idk. Microsoft was way too lax with their studios this generation and it bit them in the ass. These studios do not have the ability to output anything unless someone is constantly whipping them into shape. It's not even a Microsoft problem. Nintendo's Retro Studios spent like 6 years trying to shit out an unfinished "disney movie licensed videogame" tier shovelware game until Nintendo told them to stop being fucking stupid retards and handed them Prime 4. Fuck, even on the same topic as Prime 4, Bandai Namco spent the same amount of time trying to shit out a version of Prime 4 that was so dogshit, they had to tell Bamco to fuck off and hand it to Retro Studios.

how i understand it is this. companies feel compelled to sign on with GS because it reduces their marketing cost substantially and creates a baseline audience exposure for their games over an extended period of time. at the same time this creates a monomarket for consumers, who suddenly have a dwindling option of interesting new games coming out. imagine of Expedition 33 was on GS exclusive. the same thing happens with movies--people are afraid to engage in marketing because the cost of their product is so inordinately high (like games) and they aren't actually sure if their product will have demand and so they go with a safe option that they can then wave off to investors saying "well Microsoft managed it and we're in good hands with them," its basically because there are so many subpar games and movies that now they default sell to aggregator streaming corps for a loss. you have ppl selling 300k movies for 10k to Filmhub. same concept

It's weird that gamers seem to be the one demographic most resistant to subscription based services. No, I don't mean MMOs.
I mean that the music industry is almost entirely based on streaming now (spotify, apple music, etc). The film industry is putting movies on streaming platforms the same day or within just a month or two. TV is obviously predominantly streaming now. Very few people own albums or blurats of films/TV.
However, while gamepass does have a lot of subscribers just through the sheer amount of content it offers, people are still choosing to buy their games. While it is true that you don't "own" them on Steam or PSN or Nintedo's Eshop, the average consumer is just not interested in all of their games being on some pass they pay monthly for. It is interesting to me.
