Got Jack's Game on sale and love it so far

What are some starter tips? Do I just plow through the story / early sections and start paying attention to stuff later? My gear level jumps so far so fast every single stage, I feel like none of the equipment effects matter at all until level cap

I'll try and remember in betweens, but the biggest thing is that each job has a parry gauge so if one runs low switch to your other job

Both jobs have separate break bars
Skills and command abilities are unlocked for any job, passives are job-specific
Lightbringer is usable during hitstun or while broken and has iframes during activation
Parrying costs zero break and gives you a break regen buff. Most people latch onto Soul Shield specifically, but you should use both as the situation demands.
Hit optimize gear and don't worry about specifics until after credits.

It should be specified that "parry" is not the soul shield itself. A parry in this game is defined as pressing block close to an enemies attack, which is different to soul shield which has it's own dedicated button. Parry lets you access a combo ability as quick as possible along with the buffs anon has said, iirc the greatsword also has a special parry he can do while charging

Been loving this game too. Just finished the main story.
Only recently I realized you can hold the soul shield button, been treating it like a parry this whole time.
I got through only using the auto equip and leveling all the classes to 30.
Some good tips on this thread.

It does, and it's amazingly generous. Several seconds of parry window. That one doesn't link into parry skills though, you have to do the regular followup first.

Pretty much what ties the whole combat together, cancels, acts as a dodge sort of, and second job has a seperate break gauge not to mention that different jobs and especially weapons can have some pretty cool uses

I'd say it's a bigger standout mechanic than the soul shield. It's more important because most enemies have hyper armour. Being able to pump out damage while also being able to cancel out of said attacks to either cut down on animation time to get more damage out or just to soul shield at a moments notice or even to take advantage on job swap effects is essential and you look cool doing it

I beat the final DLC boss on a couple playthroughs without getting a full grip on it, but there are definitely benefits to learning how to do it effectively. There are builds that really let you no brain some of the later encounters, Dark Knight in particular can stack a lot of near death effects and then use blood weapon to heal off their own damage, Sage becomes a game of knowing which buffs to cast and then spamming a few elemental spells to then get Ultima off, which if built right with bonuses and Seal of Blood can generally two shot harder bosses, the list goes on. But I also think getting a good grip on chain cancels and parries lets you see just how much the combat can open up.

Experiment with different classes to see what you want to go for in the end. Every class is technically viable, even if some are better for steamrolling the main content. You might need to look up a spreadsheet to see all the affinity bonuses to figure out what you want to try and combine, certain job affinities mix extremely well together.

Eventually one mission will open up that amounts to running through enemies, opening up a chest to get a key, running to the end, and killing a Marlboro. This can be a very good mission to farm for anima shards, but you can keep using it into the DLC with higher modifiers and the Berserker subclass whose job ability lets you stunlock it to farm DLC materials and gear. There's also a later mission that you can do that requires you get a key, run to the end with two mini bosses, and knock them off the ledge in order to cheese the mission with weaker equipment.

You also eventually get the ability to put job affinities on different pieces of gear, put stats on different gear, and duplicate gear pieces. And there's an endless mode for the Rift if you want to pursue that which gives the best possible gear.

You don't really pay attention to making builds until you unlock the smithy functions that let you move affinities around and upgrade gear levels. For now, just focusing on filling out each job skill tree, they have various weapon skills and command skills that carry over across all of them.

Everyone's already said most of what I would say so I'm glad for that. One more thing I would add is to set up Auto-dismantle to dismantle literally everything of the mission level you just did, which keeps your gear being recycled and gets you Anima Shards from accessories specifically that you want to always use, it's free EXP. Also Chain Cancel is extremely important, useful and fun to use so I will reiterate that learning that is a priority. It's not difficult to do though just make it a habit.
>>714600629
Summon blessings come in at DLC2, but you can get away without using them even for DLC3, the free gear set you get for beating the game lasts until you play through for replacements you specifically want to use which is something you can do on that DLC.
>>714601646
You're likely thinking of Ruin, but any attack that knocks down can ruin a tonberry's day. Lightbringer is the biggest one though, they feed you a ton of max MP with their orb attacks so spend it.

Stagger resistance comes with different levels, but combo abilities generally are better at staggering enemies so Chain Cancel means you can not only stay safer on bosses that don't stagger, you can also chain together attacks to keep enemies stunned and make the most of your MP. It's definitely one of the best things you can learn and makes for great crowd control.
>>714605036
Those missions are largely a waste, particularly the Malboro one. Any time you spend trying to kill that thing for gear you don't actually need is time you could have spent going through levels for limit releases and actually enjoying the game while still getting gear that is appropriate. You can get Dragon Treasures easily with upping trials and doing new missions so by that point you'll have a lot of them naturally, and any materials you want come from the cactuars in the Wanderer mission.

There's a specific endgame Job Affinity/Summon Blessing setup a bunch of people like to use that lets you refund so much max MP on Lightbringer that you end up positive. As time goes on you start getting access to a lot more MP refill effects in general, focus on learning the basic ways now since you can still get a lot from good Break management, consistent Soul Shielding and Job/Command Ability choice but once Master Points become a thing look into Parry: MP Recovery.

Swords have a good AOE on their second link, I forget it's name but it's a spinning wind slash and you get it from red mage. Dragoon's Jump job skill is very good at dealing with groups since you're invincible in the air and can gap close any distance. So if there's a particular enemy you want to take out that's far away, it'll help get you over there while avoiding everything else. Katana also has a wind skill that causes a small tornado and sucks enemies in and is good for crowds but it's only on certain weapons. Ninja's elemental ninpo are crazy good for crowds once you unlock the specialization that lets ailments restore tool uses but that's more of a specialized build for way later on. There's plenty more options but that's just off the top of my head, it's been a long time since I played it.

That's kind of a weird take on it, you can access it quickly from the back link attack and from the garo skill. I like to have garo set as the link 1 attack and after parry link. This will let you smoothly transition into senshin combos after a parry or one normal attack and you can always mix in the the normal flurry parries into these combos as well. Katana is a beast once it gets going, especially with the dlc skills that have parry and iframes.

I think the issue I was having was the fact that senshin has the parry on attack but the emphasis on getting your combos out asap has you're always mid animation committed, so you're never able to use your senshin parry and are forced to chain cancel into your other job and break senshin to either soul shield or manual parry and now you need to rely on garro's finishing animation to get back into senshin and are at the mercy of the attacker. Am I wrong? That's how it felt

After you first beat the game and go into DLC1 is actually the best time to start playing around with gear effects at the Smithy thanks to the sets it gives you which are better than anything you'll get without removing the challenge, while also introducing Master Points to further play around with. DLC2 you can consider trying to make use of Fusing but it would take some specific Job use to get the materials for it and it's a bit more convenient to wait till DLC3 where materials are a non-issue.
>>714610083
Senshin normal attacks can actually cancel any combo abilities at any time, so any ability you do can be cancelled into a parry attack. This also resets the ability chain so you can use it to both cut recovery time short and rapidly use the first ability. It even lets you cancel Garo into attacking much quicker, before it fully comes out.

Like that other anon said, I forget to mention that you can cancel garo which is also useful to get to the parry flurry quicker if you want. But yeah, it resets the combo chain so you can weave the parries into the combo whenever you want. You have to get used to some timing obviously but it's crazy strong once you get used to it. Also combo abilities will stagger most things anyways.

It's very cool to get a handle on and part of why it's my favourite weapon, though they're all excellent. There's a bunch of cool weapon-specific quirks and cancel tech all throughout the game, it's a ton of fun. Command Abilities can also cancel animations, with Lightbringer even able to cancel when you've been broken. Any charge abilities like Iai-Giri can also be cancelled the moment charging starts by blocking, dodging or Shielding.

I think the side content is really retarded, because all of the loot you find is always gonna be underleveled. What's the point? At least in Nioh, your character level is going up so nothing is a waste. But there is no character level in SoP, only loot. Am I missing something? I see zero incentive to do the side missions (I guess there's job level but you get enough of that just playing the main story)

If you ever feel like the boss is bodying you too hard during main game, start investing in the magic class lines and beeline to white mage asap. Regen is a spell that gets slept on a lot, the hp tick is pretty fast, buffs the entire party with the spell, and is cheaper than the cure spell. Swap class mid fight, Pop it, swap back, and be defensive for a few seconds, you'll get just as much hp back as using your usual means of healing without wasting resources you can't get back

Depends. In rifts the spike in difficulty kind of expects you to be geared with maxed out jobs at level 100+ already to distribute mastery points so you don't get 1 shot. This makes trying a new build you might not have touched before with jobs still at level 30 very very difficult to get the ball rolling with. Considering you can only extra until rift 20 I think, I think it's balanced enough to give you a good start with another build to grind job levels if you dont have anima crystals to dump into job levels

Job level is your character level and you have several of them to go through, while gear level also has an impact as long as you're around the mission level. Side missions also have their own unlocks and just learning to better deal with the enemies and have fun playing the videogame is the biggest incentive available that is always in play. If you're talking about Chaos mode and the DLC, the game didn't originally have the free gear sets and it was set up so you would either steadily increase the levels as you got higher gear or just rush to the highest level and work your way through, but the free gear sets make for a much smoother curve overall and let you get more into effect customization while still offering limit releases and job level to get stronger.
>>714611160
Nioh 2 edges it out but you should be playing both, Jack's game offers plenty of its own value that's distinct from what Nioh 2 does while having a similar core appeal of indepth fluid combat.

You already have several powerful defensive options at that point both from Command Abilities and the Warrior of Light set which covers most of what you'd need all by itself without having to go that far. You just simply use the Dragon Treasures you got throughout Bahamut to buy Anima Crystals to keep that set usable (after buying all the Limit Releases of course), use the rest on Job levels and you're good to go, if anything Rift is initially easier than Bahamut due to how gateways are set up and the relative lack of trials as well as the difference going between them compared to Hard then Bahamut.

I recall it falling off incredibly quickly, well before I got into rifts. The level disparity was too big to actually smithy the light set to a decent level. I just burned through crystals. The defining factor for early rifts when you want a new build is your job level. If you don't have the mastery points for raw stat boosts you just get rolled on a new build.

Game instructions are brief and confusing so here is how to get shit done:
- swap control scheme so you are attacking with X/square instead of R1.
- set auto-dismantle to whatever the level you are on drops -1 throughout the normal game
- the main quest areas increase difficulty (which is drop level) almost every time so you can just auto equip highest level equipment the normal game, and ignore the smith
- one exception is when you get the choice of earth/fire crystal where you can smith gear for the 2 areas you do 2nd
- smithing uses items from the same rank dismantled and you will have an entirely different rank gear post game so use it freely
- there is always a save point before a boss
- save points respawn enemies

- MP goes up when you hit enemies with regular attacks
- MP goes down when you use 'job' abilities
- ***MAX MP GOES DOWN WHEN YOU USE COMMAND ABILITIES*** (do not play through the entire game using lightbringer and wondering how you are supposed to ever use job abilities unless you want an insane challenge)
- Max MP goes down to 2 when you die on a boss
- MAX MP goes up when you 'break' enemies by pressing B/circle after depleting their yellow bar
- Every boss but one has two phases of half their HP that end when you break them
- Ability damage reduces the enemy's max break bar

- Expect your Allies to be useless at times
- red target reticle means you are the target
- left/right on d-pad causes allies to use their abilities
- allies have a small handful of jobs unique to each of them, unlocked through quests
- allies each have 2 different weapons they can use and a specific armor type

- basic jobs are obtained as you get weapon drop that job uses
- basic job trees branch to end at advanced jobs
- advanced jobs require up to 3 basic job tree unlocks
- advanced jobs lead to expert jobs
- jobs all go to level 30 in the regular game, so you unlock the whole tree
- you equip 2 jobs at once and can swap with a button press
- SET 2ND JOB AS ONE YOU WANT TO LEVEL PASSIVELY TO UNLOCK ALL JOBS
- then best use is one with buffs and ranged attack and one for melee
- magic is cast by holding the ability button and using the movement direction to pick from the wheel
- holding it longer improves the spell; fire->fira->firaga; regen/regenga
- ultima is cast after using 6 spells and then selecting it AFTER the cast circle completes

POST GAME
- swap difficulty to CHAOS (select on the map)
- increase the difficulty of a quest to 300
- you can freely select which difficulty to do after unlocking them
- finishing a higher rank gives all the one time rewards of the lower ranks
- main story quests all have level unlocks for jobs (30->55->80->99)
- you can get these shortly in bahamut difficulty so just get 1 or 2 of your main job
- jobs now have mastery points (R3 on job tree), stamina and spirit are a good start
- aim for Monk 400% (+999 hp)
- then Dark Knight 400% (near death affects always active) + Berserker 250% (protect/shell when near death)
- there is a level 200 quest which unlocks bahamut (near Chaos shrine) then another scene only quest to talk to him
- swap difficulty to Bahamut
- Quests now all increase up to 400
- jobs now all have a light/dark ability tree available at level 30
- ***SELECT LIGHT/DARK JOB IN THE LIST WHERE YOU EQUIP JOBS***

- GET JOBS TO 30 for gear drops to have light/dark affinity (monk/berserker/dark knight prioritized)
- these affinities give you a light/dark rank (you have both at once)
- gear has affects which are only active if you have high enough light/dark affinity
- bahamut trial rank affects what rank these affects are
- bahamut trials are penalties you set before starting a level; they multiply the repeatable reward (up to 45x)
- you can set all of them and finish the non-combat 'Greedy' mission to find the spear in 1 of 3 chests
- you don't even have to set half of them to max the trial rank at VI
- 45x level 400 non-combat mission reward will open Bahamut's conversation topics in a few runs
- talk to bahamut until he gives mission, do mission, repeat
- 'floating island' main story quest has a hidden loot sphere along the left door path, down a hole around the spike traps room with no enemies (you can see it down the hole). You need to do the mission this opens to allow the smith to increase job affinity on gear using crests
- +60% affinity, +80% 2h weapon, +120% 2 slot armor (2 slot costs more to upgrade)
- buy the job level unlocks from the bahamut token store
- complete missions for the remainder of the job level unlocks (up to 200)

- enemies including bosses all drop accessories that will either reduce damage done or taken along with random effects

I would actually advise against swapping to attack with square/triangle simply due to magic/ninja jobs being easier to use with the R1/R2 setup. When I first started I played around with both control schemes but ultimately, it's better to be able to have your thumb on the right stick while aiming magic.

The job system kept me going my whole playthrough, but you're bound to encounter a couple of walls that are tricky. Plus if you want to do post game, prepare to look at spreadsheets actually telling you job affinity bonuses and all. Classes are specifically tied to their job ability, their bonuses, and what weapons they can use, so while weapon skills are fairly similar, they generally behave differently and there are ones that scale off different stats. You'll still want to level each class because each has an ability that can be carried to different classes, like how Dragoon's get Lancet which heals and gives MP depending on exploiting enemy weaknesses, and it pairs well with spellcasters. It feels worth experimenting with those abilities and it's worth learning to switch between both jobs you have equipped.
