You told me it was bad. Atrocious. You said it was the devil himself in video game form. Now that I've played it for an entire month, I have just one question to ask you...

Why did you lie to me?

>no one wanted a banjo racing game

They wanted a game that would go back to Banjo's roots and forgot which game he debuted in.

You didn't have to wait eight years for 'Banjo Threeie' only to be greeted with this dog shit. At least the soundtrack was OK.

I have always praised this game and my friends can attest to that. I think what it offered players in creative expression and puzzle solving freedom outweigh any negative issues to take with the game being not a platformer collectathon. The entire premise also takes place in a separate world from BK so that's also further justification. I felt the entire thing was like a theme park (including the literal theme park) where you could be creative and have fun with your toys.

I don't enjoy crafting games all that much. But I loved Nuts & Bolts.

It's an amazing game and a good banjo game.

>Why did you lie to me?
people lied to themselves saying they wanted yet another 3D platformer. But they were all playing Call of Duty and Halo, not Mario Bros.
It's funny cause the game addresses this at the beginning of the game and got people offended for saying the truth. As if companies don't study the market before releasing a game.

By that logic then Banjo Threeie should have been a gritty military shooter, not a cartoony car-builder. Nobody was asking for that period. There were still platformers doing well during that era. Sony had quite a few with Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, and there were a bunch of third party ones too. Xbox had Blink the fucking cat and youโ€™re telling me they couldnt make another platformer for Banjo? Rare was just done with the series at that point and wanted to try something different, so nuts and bolts was their compromise. Itโ€™s not a Banjo Kazooie game. Itโ€™s a spinoff at best

I tried the Banjo games and they just seemed really slow and sluggish compared to Mario 64. I unironically would have preferred to play a car game since then I know it would have had more movement to it.

To be fair all three of those tried to come up with spins on the platformer genre. Jak and Daxter became the very gritty shooter you're talking about (relatively at least). Sly Cooper tried to be a platformer spin on the stealth genre and Blinx had that whole time manipulation mechanic.

Thread should have ended right here. Banjo skipped a whole console generation and when they finally brought him back, it was something completely different from what they showed initially. I remember the 2008 trailer where they showed off a vehicle shooting down a Mario structure made of blocks and I thought to myself, "They're going that far, huh?" Not because it was an attack on Nintendo, but because Mario himself represents the platformer genre and that was Rare pretty much saying fuck making a platformer, this is what Banjo is now.

All the depreciation and meta shit cost them severely, but we didn't know how severe it would be. That 2010/2011 dump of all their past stuff was the initial sign, Rare Replay was a hard confirmation they were finished as a company. All because Gregg was a bitch who didn't want to make a simple platformer that would have kept Rare safe from restructuring and liquidation.

tl;dr it was fucking bad if you played the first two games during their respective releases, on the same console no less.

Nuts and Bolts is the most fun game in the series by far. Not saying it's better or more enjoyable overall, just that the fun-o-meter in Nuts and Bolts is way higher than other games

I love those first 2 games but you gotta admit they're not so much "fun" as they are just pleasant and charming.

Nah man I'm not a Banjo hater I just don't think the first BK is viscerally fun. It's enjoyable but a lot of the shit you do in that game is not that fun. BK is engaging cuz the level design is excellent and it's very charming but it's not like playing the piano with the ghost hand is "fun" or spelling your own name in the sandcastle is "fun" persay. Building vehicles and solving (some of) the challenges in Nuts and Bolts is MATERIALLY fun in the true sense of the word. Running around as Mario in Mario 64 is fun cuz he's fun to control. But the shit you do in BK isn't usually that fun, it's an enjoyable game for other reasons

This is the problem with gamers today, you're not playing a game for the right reasons, you're analyzing them. If Banjo-Kazooie wasn't fun, Tooie wouldn't have existed. Even then, people knew what was fun and what wasn't.

Seriously, stop 'analyzing' games from a critical point and just fucking enjoy or, be honest and say you didn't enjoy BK/BT. Stop beating around the bush.

Yep. Banjo Kazooie and Tooie were both loved games by the N64 crowd, there was next to nothing when Rare switched to Microsoft, then we get a trailer that showed off the new designs for the character but they showed off imagery that invoked the idea this new game was going to be a platformer, and then we got the reveal of the kart building sim. Looking back, Nuts and Bolts isn't a bad game, especially if you like that kind of thing, but it felt like a betrayal of what the original games were like for the fans that were waiting awhile. If they were up front about what they wanted to do, it might've been taken less harshly. What doesn't help is the game itself mocks its roots plenty of times, which was like kicking a dog while it's down.
