The only reason to ever play any was to fuck around with friends, but superior options for doing that appeared, so.

I mean, I guess there was some other stuff you could do, like exploring and admiring WoW's environment- I remember a thread on /vr/ where an anon posted a bunch of cool pictures- but that gets boring quick. Gameplay wise MMOs have nothing that's attractive. Casuals and autists both have options that cater to them better.

No they aren't, most normalfags are starting to get roku or fire sticks and use the free services, or just flat out use free tv/movie websites. There are entire facebook groups for normies dedicated to keeping people updated with the latest free tv website.

Normalfags nowadays pay for a netflix/hulu/amazon subscription for like one month to watch a new TV show that released, then they'll cancel their subscription when they're done. Not that many people are keeping up 24/7 subscriptions on multiple services anymore.

Those two hardcore groups are the only ones who actually engage with MMOs as a genre for the sake of their gameplay experience. Casuals, economic players, and RPers all played for reasons tangential to the actual gameplay and over time just found better outlets as the novelty of the MMO experience wore off.

They really did. 3.0 was supposed to be the big revival and instead we got a Frankenstein UI, balance changes nobody asked for, and half the classes feel like they were designed by interns on a dare. Ankama spent more time on their animated spin-offs than actually polishing the relaunch. Nostalgia can only carry a game so far when the minute-to-minute gameplay feels like molasses in 2025.

I know people would fill a rubber tire with gasoline and light it on fire around me neck for saying this but I fucking WISH MMO's focused on casual players more on the game design side of things, not monetization. By that I don't mean "I wish they sold more MTX to make us level up quicker", no I mean I wish they let casuals involve themselves in the game world. What I remember so fondly of OG World of Warcraft was that you could get by on just picking berries or being a merchant or a traveler or someone who sold player buffs. Now it seems like an expectation you'll do raids and kill things and do PVP at some point. Maybe I just want a comfy hangout space.

MMOs aren't like this anymore because they're too generous now. Back then you could get by on picking berries, buying low/selling high or selling buffs because everyone was scraping buy trying to scrounge up whatever change they could find. I think having the average player struggle for pots and other basic needs was an important aspect in MMOs and making people feel invested in the world imo. Any little thing that gets you some money matters and these games are full of content that give you small amounts of money. All of that is useless when the game basically streamlines the entire game experience into making the player character a raid-ready godkiller of the world.

Those games (and other MMO's) were geared towards combat, you truthfully couldn't do anything else without participating in combat at some stage even if you want to pick rarer berries because it'll be in a high level dungeon. There just isn't any progression when it comes to casual stuff and most MMO's treat it as a side activity where being level 1 berry picker is no different than being level 99 berry picker. Even just a simple "now that you're experienced, you can navigate thorn bushes to pick rarer berries!" would go a long way.

F2P microtransaction games. MMOs attracted huge investment in the 2000s because the subscription model seemed more lucrative than standard games at the time. It was, but really only for the industry leaders. Once f2P monetization and lootboxes/gacha were popularized and proived popular all the cynical money investment in games moved over to that both on mobile and PC. MMOs can make a lot of money but they take a massive amount of development effect to keep invested players happy.

It seems like a lot of mmo players lost motivation after what happened to retail wow and other modern slopmos

Maybe Aion 2 will be fun for a while.. never tried the first one tho

>Mabinogi is still good and gettin an engine rework
This hasn't happened yet and Mabinogi is P2W with the reforge system last I played.
>MapleStory, despite it's age, has timeless graphics, solid gameplay, and is still updated with content and classes. It is what it is.
Fair enough but if xiv was f2p I would put it above both of them.

they were never good in the first place. The gameplay was always pretty embarrassing

You can get reforges in game now, and next update on KR removes the line gaining/ranking up so you always get rank 1 three line.
UE5 remake is probably another 2~3 years out still but they showed a bit of gameplay with combat and gathering recently at their live event.

>You can get reforges in game now
Thank god. I'll try it out again tonight. I'm still kind of assblasted because I lost some very expensive scrolls in game (my own fault) but it is what it is.

Retail WoW got much worse when it started borrowing heavily from newer MMOs, particularly GW2 and FFXIV systems like fractals, heart events, forced campaign, skyriding
Why borrow from your competition when you're clearly winning? If these systems were so good then people would be playing them instead but they're not

what's the deal with wow's new player experience being non-existent after exile's reach? you just get dumped into your faction capital and told to fuck off with no lore or anything. you're just supposed to know who there famous people are. also you're a trusted champion or something along those lines for whatever reason.
how do they actually expect to keep new players coming in?

anyone know if dc universe online is still any good? i remember playing it a lot back in the day but it had a ton of content locked behind premium episodes or some similar shit and there wasn't much of a playerbase back then

Not only do you basically get dropped like a turd in the world after Exile's reach if you queue for dungeons people will speedrun them and if they dont know the dungeon they will get verbally abused.

>feel like giving either it or pirate101 a go since I don't have to worry about ping due to turn based.
>sub turns me off everytime.

You'd really think they would try and hook you by making the non-paid stuff just a bit longer.
