It might be one of the most stark tonal shifts I've ever seen in a cartoon. Past the midway point it's all nothing but relationship drama and Finn misery porn. Actually painful to watch.

I was too old to watch this when it was airing so I'm going on anons recollections and complaints, but you'd think that it could have turned into will they won't they rescuing the princess harem relationship drama , rather than some sort of lesbian focus point where the protag (if anons are correct) basically is treated as a third wheel and doesn't get the happy ending when others do. I'm not saying it had to have no relationship stuff or no in depth bits (some anon said that the ice wizard joke character and the vampire have some tragic-ish backstory), but there's a difference between adding gravitas as the viewers grow and (apparently) turning the hero into a punching bag because he's a young male and he doesn't get a happy ending because of culture war something something.

It's Sugar's fault but not directly. As much shit as poeple on /co/ give Rebecca at least when an Episode is written or directed by Sugar it's fairly decent. The problem came when Sugar and a good chunk of the staff left and the poeple left behind were talentless hacks who wanted to write just like Sugar but was in fact not Sugar.

It has a pretty firm ending if you bother to watch the bonus episodes that aired later on.
Namely, Jake dies, Finn ends up getting with Jake's granddaughter Bronwyn, and eventually Finn dies with such intense lingering regret over Jake that he hunts him down in the afterlife just to be with him in death.
And of course, the world goes to shit too.

The creator (Pen Ward) left and then the show became a lot worse.

It started off a lighthearted and weird show about a guy and a magic dog going on adventures and fighting mythical beasts.

And then it turned into a dark and mysterious show when they tried to say that all the humans got wiped out in WWIII and all the magic was created by one of the nukes.

And then Pen Ward left and it abruptly turned into Finn being angsty and it turned into a boring romance show.

Then it started to get really overly complicated and cringe and they retconned some of the established lore with newer more boring lore lol.

Some of it's pretty good. I still think Randy Cunhamm was the more enjoyable series though.
