Nintendo would shit the bed if they made an actual new console and locked all their Sega and Atlus games there as exclusives. If people wanted to play the new persona, sonic, yakuza, etc they would all be forced to buy the console but it would also create a lot of outrage and hatred towards Sega because only Nintendo gets to do that and everyone else that does exclusives is bad

Sega would adopt the Xbox method of putting all their games on PC and, if it works, on mobile. Most of us wouldn't lose anything. Also I don't see Sega suddenly no longer willing to put their Sonic games and old classic games on Nintendo like they always do, or their Persona games on Xbox/PlayStation. Yakuza I could see going Sega console PC, mobile only though

To add to this though, I do think Sega is better off not jumping back in to consoles. Hardware manufacturing costs would be way too high for one, but I really just don't think the appetite is there for a Sega box anymore when PlayStation and Nintendo have it taken care of. You could say that Sega could differentiate by bring the arcade box or something, but since nobody really goes after those anymore, it'd be a losing strategy.

Nintendies has the toddler market

Xbox is basically just babbies first PC at this point

They don't have a draw because Sonic and other IPs are already multiplat. The console has to be crazy innovative like the Wii or something

As cool as it would be, it's doubtful that Sega would want to spoil its profits with the money pit that is hardware. However, Sega has an incredible amount of intellectual properties, most of which are dormant. They are bringing back Virtua Fighter, but I wonder if they are thinking about the best way to get some of those IPs back out there either as retro re-releases or reviving them?

Okay consider this: a Sega console that's basically just a big Miku figurine that can play games. You can change out the outfits, the heads (for other Vocaloids, natch), and buy little accessories to go around the base of the figurine console (some games come with figurines, like a special edition of the obligatory Sonic game comes with a miniature Sonic the Hedgehog that leans up against Miku's leg).

And that's exactly one of the worst things about it. After like 5 or 6 years in development hell, they changed gears and prioritized making it a Switchslop third party replacement controller over making it an actual replacement for a 3D Pad. This wouldn't hurt so bad if they at least greenlit production for the on-model 3D Pad repro they showed off when they first got the SEGA license.

Sega will never re-enter the console market, as they don't have any of the developers they used to have in order to justify it, or sell a console with. There will be no new Sonic Adventure, no new Virtua Fighter, no new Sonic 1. Anyone capable of making things like this was fired or became a soulless husk to survive during the past 20 years.

I do not see how this would work. I mean yes maybe 12 years ago it would have been worth it to have a platform and make exclusives. But with rising costs of games and budgets, you are limiting yourself. It makes sense to be a multiplatform distributor. Their key issue is failing to execute on their ideas and throwing ninja stars on notes and choosing to go with that as a whole.

The Dreamcast has a DirectX 6 level GPU and WinCE for DC uses DX6. The Xbox GeForce 3 tier GPU on the other hand uses Direct X8.1, and DX8.1 basically rolled out as a PC update on the same day as the release of the Xbox.

Peter Moore clearly took his Sega of America and Dreamcast experience to lay the foundation for the Xbox. It's notable that the Dreamcast was discontinued in America the same year the Xbox dropped and the Dreamcast's internet support was Windows-based and Developers could choose between a Sega developed Katana development environment or Windows CE. Katana had significantly less overhead and was faster, but Windows CE made porting games from the PC significantly easier

>Microsoft developed a custom Dreamcast version of Windows CE
>Was released right after the Dreamcast was discontinued
>Literally uses the Dreamcast controller layout minus the VMU
>Sega offered backwards compatibility for Dreamcast games
>The Dreamcast was a testbed of sorts for Microsoft, with some of the console's games running on a custom version of Windows CE
>Peter Moore who worked for Microsoft on the Xbo was the president and COO of Sega of America
>The ESPN games, Gunvalkyrie, Headhunter Redemption, The House of the Dead 3, Jet Set Radio Future, NBA games, NCAA games, NFL games, NHL games, Otogi, Outrun, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Phantom Crash, Puyo Pop: Fever, Rent-A-Hero No. 1, Sega GT, Sega Soccer, the Sonic games, Spartan: Total Warrior, Spikeout, Super Monkey Ball: Deluxe, and Toejam & Earl 3 were all released on the Xbox
>Hell, Jet Set Radio Future was even bundled with it
>It went for the same audience of cool, hip, eXtreme jock gamers that the Dreamcast did
>It fully realized the online gaming feature Sega ambitiously set out to popularize despite lacking the resources
>Right at the end of Microsoft's E3 2007 conference, exec Peter Moore revealed a special edition Xbox 360 to be branded with Halo 3.

They've been making PC games all along.

Unironically, I think it could work if they marketed the Dreamcast 2 or whatever they'd call it like one of those retro consoles like the PS1 mini or Snes mini. Then sold the games digitally and physically. Don't limit the games to just Sega hardware either, sell emulated versions for PC and other consoles too.

This current business model is working pretty well for Atari and their 2600+

This. The indie scene has shown there is, in fact, still a market for short, quick games with high levels of replayability, especially since so many developers have since moved away from that starting with the 5th gen onwards (except Nintendo, which took until 7th gen for them to do so). Sega can still pull off arcadey stuff, and they have a ton of IPs to work with.
Selling only 100,000 copies at $15 during release month doesn't sound so bad when the game only cost $1,000,000 to make. I think they absolutely could make this approach work. The only problem is the hardware manufacturing costs, which would have definitely been easier 15 years ago.

They also don't cost nearly as much in terms of time, money, or labor, to make. In a world where the average game price is reaching near triple digits, there's plenty of room for good cheap games that don't have hyperinflated budgets that demand high price points + massive sales to profit.

I sincerely believe they would be successful if they released a *real* console now.
Everyone is tired of Nintendo's shit, Xbox is total crap with no exclusives. Sony is getting has been. If SEGA gets in there they will quickly dominate with great exclusives, a fresh new look, innovative games and all the beloved SEGA franchises.

They really need to go all in and make it have the cool factor. Bring back the arcade spirit. Make the console available in a transparent plastic model on release.

I know I would 100% buy one and many people have nostalgia for the Dreamcast/Saturn and early 2000s games.

DO EET SEGA

I don't want consoles to exist anymore I'm not a child anon.
SEGA should make their own Linux disto instead

I think they should consider making a SEGA branded Steam deck type machine. Thoughts?

In arcades maybe, but not home console. The SegaCD didn't need to exist, not when the Saturn was already happening. Same with the 32X, those games also could've been shoved onto the Saturn like how PS1 had a large library of 2D games. There's nothing innovative about these. And please explain why the Genesis II and Mega Drive II exist. Are they stronger than the original or just the same damn thing but different design? If the latter then why bother at all instead of again, just working on the fucking Saturn.

SEGA was legitimately very innovative in terms of hardware design, there's a reason things like SEGA style controllers and trademark floating disc pads are still made to this day, when it comes to certain things they were far ahead of everyone else, they were using analog triggers and custom hall effect sticks decades before they became widespread, they were the first console makers to adopt internet connections, the list goes on.
They were also legitimately retarded and made a lot of absolutely puzzling decisions, for every step forward and innovative hardware decision they took two steps back somewhere else but that doesn't change the fact that they were absolutely pushing tech standards.

If they ever go back to consoles I wish they start using the slogan from sonic adventure 2 "wishes are eternal" for marketing. Shit like "It's thinking" is cryptic and false advertising when only one game, Seaman, actually applied that philosophy. And Saturn marketing was so stupid it's not even worth talking about

Mega Drive 2 is just a next step in the continual process to reduce costs. There is not just a Mega Drive 1, and 2. There a like a dozen different hardware revisions where they continually simplify and consolidate components, Mega Drive 2 was just an outwardly visible hardware revision where they finally downsized the shell.
