I thought about getting an intermediate one just to play Pokemon hacks, fangames, game fan translations like the recent Sakura Wars, Fate/Extra CCC, classic SMT, FE and a few good indies.
But I can do in real hardware or my phone so it's kinda pointless. If my shitty country let me import batteries and I knew how to restore my old PSP, I could do everything except Saturn on it even. PPSSPP isn't perfect.

real hardware is worse than emulation handhelds at this point desu. by the time you've got a flashcart and a screenmod to make it usable you've spent twice as much just to play one console rather than a dozen.

They enjoy emulating on a piece of software they "own" and "control" what happens inside it. Hence Steam Deck is popular for emulating rather than Chinahelds for that crowd.

Any piece of hardware you can do more with is better. An LCD Deck still puts any chinkheld (even close to its pricepoint) to shame, unless you care too much about having something small.

Uhun, but I tried to play Fate/Extra CCC emulated and it looked like garbage on my phone screen, mainly 2D assets, I need to use 2x and shaders that make it laggy. I dunno if a cheap chink handheld would do better.
I tested with my real PSP on the charger and everything looked smooth and nice there.

Some pointers:

Buy from chinks, dropshippers will scalp you.
Look for and value negative feedback first and foremost. Youtube reviews are nearly useless. Reddit is just a bunch of gay niggers acting like women about $40 electronics.
Treat each chinkheld individually, brands are completely unreliable.
If it's said to tops at PSP, N64, DC, it can't do those. These systems cannot be played proper under $150 (chink base price).
Always, ALWAYS be skeptical of good d-pad claims. Look for people who play real games and not babby's first five JRPG for feedback.
Charge exclusively with 5v dumb bricks, USB A to C cables, never leave them charging overnight or unattended.
Most of them suffer from audio interference (ie wifi noise), the h700 based line (number/titleXX) as a whole has audio popping on ramp up (boot, loading game, quitting game, etc), if you're autistic about this.
Sticks on verticals are useless. Until triple digits, sticks are cheap generic Switch ones, very mediocre accuracy.

There's only one chinkheld I know I'd recommend in good conscience as a 100% solid build, great buttons, no internal touch up required, pick up and play experience, but it's been discontinued and it's certainly not worth the second hand market prices.

>>714658991
Just about anything can do PS1, might want to avoid Miyoo Mini to get slightly faster fast-forwarding though.
Committing to GBA, the 34xx is pretty solid IF you're willing to tape the d-pad contacts in half, the unconventional button layout won't get in your way and you can live with 3.1" on 4:3 games. Pretty nice screen. Otherwise, anything 4:3 should be a safe bet, albeit some will have washed out screens.

>>714659243
These suck at consolizing, might as well pick up a cheap mini PC.

Bitch, you NEED some piracy knowledge to get some proper use out of these, outside setting up a custom firmware for some. Most of these ship with the flimsiest fake SD cards loaded of multiple versions of the same game to pad out the numbers without Mario/Pokemon/Sonic games these days and these fail within the month 90% of the time.
Bringing up your own stuff is the way to go with these.

A modded switch can do quite a bit of emulation, but it's still not suitable. The PS1 emulator (Duckstation) can only be found randomly in some place without being properly updated and it's not amazingly intuitive.
I don't find chinkheld build quality to be reliable but for the asking price sometimes it's just expected. I just kinda dislike the shills because they don't often mention some of their stupid flaws.
Inside some drawer I have an RG350P and look, the screen is fucking amazing for GBA games, but that's what I would use it for: GBA games. The analog sticks are amazingly awful, with no way to properly calibrate them. Screen backlight leaks through its left side and you have to do some stupid tape mod, because as it turns out (and I tested it myself because I bought a replacement display), it's not just a display thing, it's just how it's built. And the d-pad is a mess that also needs to get modded.

I have a 4+ and I love it. All the GC and PS2 games I've tried run well and it's perfect for Steam Remote Play. The ergonomics suck though. I found it painful to play for more than 15 minutes, so I bought a grip and that fixed it. IDK if 5 is the same. Getting steam remote play to work without lag was also a bitch, but that was PC related.

PowKiddy V90S First Look A Clamshell to Rival the RG35XX SP 00-03-45
>>714661051
Ended up liking the 28xx a lot, though I did have to pad the fucker's buttons so they'd stop rattling and it has that annoying static buildup on screen after charging that takes a few minutes to go away. D-pad's great. I get people who can't live with the button size though.

>>714661084
Not even, their review units are sometimes defective and they'll still do the whole script and act like it's no indicative of QA. It's a mix of shilling and sheer indiference for what they do end up analyzing for legitimacy, for example you'll never hear Anbernic get called out for releasing so many washed out screens in a row up to recently, when even fucking Powkiddy smokes the 35xxSP's colors.

>>714661635
>any chinkhelds that are like the sp? small, convenient, can play snes/advance games
Yea-
>and won't break in six months?
Kinda.

35xxSP is a 4:3, thicker and wider version of the SP
Miyoo Flip is also 4:3, but with sticks and much closer in size to the SP, but has very unreliable hinges. They're doing a 2.8" downsizing next but again, big question mark on the hinge.
34xxSP is a shameless clone of the Flip but with Anbernic hinges, 3:2 screen and 2GB of RAM.
v90s is a slightly cheaper version of the 35xxSP but with rubber membrane on contact buttons, more colorful screen, better speaker and no wifi or bt (I think?). Too early to judge its hinge.

I'm honestly tempted with the Ayaneo pocket s2. Like it still has SD card slot, full usb C, so it will be compatible with Retroid's second screen addon. If i had a job or get lucky with the upcoming interviews i might buy it. Or maybe just a retroid 5 bundle with second screen.
>>714658625
Honestly it's hard to tell, because depends on the form factor you prefer, be it joystick lay our or horizonal, vertical form factor (so psp/psvita vs gameboy or those old tetris games from 1 dollar store) and what games you want to play on them.

Miyoo is too small only good for showing people how small it is.
To play anything until PS1 you can get a RG35XXX, pretty cheap around 40 euros and will play everything at 60fps, if you are willing to expend more for DS and PSP you are better getting a PSVITA and a 3DS

Your A55 is likely to be better than the cheaper handhelds of course, but you give up a little bit of convenience with it (having to set up a frontend, removing and attaching a controller, notifications and android bullshit getting in the way...). But I would recommend grabbing something more like a controller, like those EasySMX ones, instead of the Kishi, if you don't want a separate device.

What this says to me instead is that you're content to being treated poorly, as long as you have your 'good goy' points balance on the positive side by knowing you're paying for it. It depends on what you want to play and how much you want to spend. Also form factor, to some extent. A TrimUI Brick or MiyooMini Plus are in the $60~ range, and they can play everything up through PS1 very well. Where things get expensive is when you want to emulate N64, PS2, Gamecube...

Vita unfortunately is a software and emulator issue, even on PC it isnt good enough yet but there are games that run well on it likes tales of hearts and muramasa. I wouldnt go and replace your vita for vita games just yet. However most of Vita's library is usually ported from elsewhere so you might be able to play those games with the switch emulator or the windows emulator at this point but you'd have to do research on the games because it's a case by case basis at this point.

Why not just use your phone, or buy a phone specifically to run RETROARCH on and nothing else for optimal performance/less distractions?
Retroarch with a light CRT filter is the peak, the screen is too small for your eyes to tell the difference between filter and real.
>hugely supported
>extremely easy to add roms to
>can use literally any controller recognized by the phone (PS4 pad with a cheap plastic attachment to hold the phone, knockoff switch-style phone controllers from amazon etc)

Want some cheap android phone recommendations for emulation?

>CMF Phone 1: Costs like ยฃ150-180 and can emulate up to gamecube games, though I had some slowdown on super monkey ball 2 thats probably game specific, obviously emulates 2D things flawlessly
>Older flagship phones from the last 3-5 years: Just get gaming/emulation benchmarks for older phones, if its just for emulation you don't need the latest google security patches so long as you can load retroarch onto it and then keep it offline you're fine.
>Any phone with a snapdragon 8 gen 3 processor: From what I can see this processor can emulate Zelda BoTW at 30fps, I can't see why you'd even want much more power than this on the go.

These specific emulation devices are close to pointless for most consumers, unless you are a dire hardcore enthusiast who needs arcade perfect or hardware call perfect emulation for something akin to speedrunning or competitive play.
It's cool that advances in hardware emulation are being made regardless, as its important to be able to re-produce the original stuff and proliferate knowledge.

if you plan to emulate only up to the Dreamcast / PS1 / N64 i can recommend retroid pocket 2S for $80 - 100 if you can find one, they've actually gone up in cost a lot since they stopped producing them and it was pretty much the GOAT for handhelds under $100.
it has analog triggers, two sticks, gyro-aiming and is pretty good screen and build quality.

the Pocket 4 cost's nearly double what i could buy a 2S for at the time and is still comparatively expensive here.
if you are wanting to play PS2 and above I probably wouldn't be going for a retroid anyway.
at that point you may as well just buy a steam deck or odin and get a really good oled screen with it for the extra $50 it's gonna cost you after shipping and import tax.

Based. Retroids are the sophisticated man's emu device. It actually makes me wish there were more Android ports of proper games. Played through KOTOR 2 on my Pocket 2 and the experience was fucking perfect. Admittedly it's a little older port but a completely locked 60FPS is nice, and the battery life was fucking endless.

I wouldn't even need super modern games. Something like a FFX/X-2 remake would be perfect for the system.

It is a bit more more powerful than the RP5, but you're crazy if you expect Steam Deck-tier performances from a device (with a mobile GPU) that's about as big as a Switch lite.

Also, it's dumb to assume bigger=better.
Much of the Odin 2 is empty, you can see it with the transparent models. The form factor is specifically for people that want a slightly bigger than average chinkleld, but the components fit inside a much smaller shell.

The Odin 2 Mini is precisely that. An Odin 2 that's about as big as a RP5, slightly smaller even.

Miyoo products were only good during Covid when all of this was still sort of a burgeoning industry. At this point they are actual e-waste and pointless to buy because for the same price you can get so much better and in the same form factor with better support in terms of firmware options. The new stuff they release is also generally worse than anything Anbernic is coming out with, the Miyoo Flip being the most recent example.

When it comes to Chinese handhelds you generally have three price ranges:
>$40-80
These play up to PS1 and even then they can only barely do some N64 games. Saturn and Dreamcast are out of their scope, DS games can be played but with issues and you're not playing later games (Especially DSi) without major frame drops, and PSP is about as bad as N64 with very select games barely staying stable at 1x.
The best things at this price range are Anbernic products like the RG36s, the RG35XX-H, the RG40XX-H, the RG34XX, the RG35XX-SP, and the RG34XX-SP (I don't like it but you might). There are also devices from TrimUI in the Brick and Smart Pro.
>$150~
These play up to Wii U and PS2 but PS2 is a coin flip what is stable or not and even then Wii and Wii U aren't great. They can dip their feet into very low end Switch at best and even that's a stretch with major drops and not that realistic.
The best things at this price range are the Retroid products like the RP2 to 5 or the Flip 2.
>$250+
You don't buy Chinese handhelds in this price range. You are wasting your money by not paying for a Steam Deck or other western handheld equivalent. The sole reason you buy a Chinese handheld in this price range is for the form factor as they tend to be slightly bigger than a Vita. The downsides are that their performance is worse than any western handheld PC, they are locked to Android which sucks ass for emulation on newer systems, you have worse RMA, warranties will not be honored, etc.
This price range is primarily dominated by the AYANEO brand.

Because phone gaming is absolute shit and anyone who recommends it is delusional and not living reality.
>You are using your phone for other tasks such as getting texts, notifications, and so on. Unless you mute all of these and then unmute them when you're done playing games they will regularly be popping up during your gaming session.
>Phone attachments are fairly large and make the thing Switch-width at minimum. They also cost as much if not more than a lower end Chinese handheld. Gamesir controllers are the best bang for the buck in terms of price and quality and even they're anywhere from $40-100.
>Screen aspect ratio is terrible for basically any system so you will always have enormous black spaces horizontally.
>You will be using a phone's battery meaning not only are you actively draining your battery used for phone calls, texts, e-mails, notifications, and more, but gaming in general quickly wears down a phone battery and that includes emulation.
My current phone is from 2020 or 2021, I forget. If I play something as simple as PvZ2 or The Battle Cats on it I go from 100% to 20% in about two hours and this is a phone with a battery at 87% battery health. Phone gamers are delusional who don't use their phones for actual life and play them solely in their homes tethered to a wall.

>>714682996
Because false diagonals are prevalent in basically every Chinese handheld so you have to open the things up and tape the inner portions of each contact to prevent these issues. It's by far the worst on the RG34XX where out of the box the thing will be hitting diagonals hitting dead center on the direction at times. I have misclicked so many times on Super Mariomon it's insane because of that.
The RG35XX-H also has dome piercing issues where you need to get washers 3D printed to place on the silicone membranes of the buttons, and depending on rev 1 or 2 of the device you may need to do both the d-pad and buttons.

Because they see that it has thousands of games from their childhood and they want to buy it for $40. They don't understand why it has thousands of games on it. It's why the #1 thing you see in half the questions about these things is either "How many games come on the SD card?" or "Do games come on the SD card?". They also don't replace the e-waste MicroSD card that will die on them in a month and use that indefinitely.

You can literally hit straight right on the RG34XX d-pad and go down-right or up-right. This is the most well known issue of the device and even reviews outright tell you how bad it is. I own one of them and have had this issue that doesn't exist on my RG35XX-H, my RG35XX-SP, or a TrimUI Smart Pro.

OoT works fine.
Last I checked, MM was struggling with some stuff, like not being able to render the clock on the UI and having it as text instead. That was in the early days though, no idea now.
MK64 runs fine but the port itself is still very broken and needs work.
I hear SF64 runs okay, dying a bit on the map.
SM64 has a port soiled with HD textures on Portmaster but you can disable those by renaming the texture folder, runs perfect.

So anyway I'll now be shilling this controller because it's a Sony Xperia Play that isn't dogshit.
>TMR analog sticks (higher resolution and lower power consumption than hall effect analog sticks, "tunnel magneto resistance")
>analog triggers
>membrane over dome switch d-pad and buttons (GBA SP or Playstation Vita styled)
>supports magsafe locking to any phone through a supplied adapter or through magsafe cases/stickers
>bluetooth primarily but supports USB-C connection
>attachment base is detachable from the controller body for "tabletop" gameplay, base serves as a phone kickstand
>fold-out controller handles for better ergonomics

This makes "just use your phone" an actual point of advice because it's not a telescopic controller. It also makes "just buy last year's flagship or repurpose your old phone and use that as a handheld" an actual point of advice.

Seems to run fullspeed on external Mupen under Rice plugin, but there's no FPS counter so I'm unsure. No telling if effects are broken either, the splash screens at the start sure were scrambled. Ship of Harkinian 2 has the clock now, some minor hiccups on certain transitions until getting to clock town, otherwise seems to play fine. Tested on CubeXX (equal to anything running H700), if you're serious about N64 might want to spend more.

I remember my uncle selling the Half-Life 2 beta leak for $20 at the flea market six months before the game released it felt like real hackerman shit back in the day.

The attosecond my child becomes capable of learning I too will teach him, out of love.

Odin2 is the thinkin man's choice. Perfectly optimized for what it is trying to be.
But its near $300, not a far cry from a Steam Deck LCD, but that's clearly not optimized for what it's trying to be.
If you have a competent gaming PC, I'd get an Odin 2 and play the classics.
If you don't have a competent gaming PC, still don't get a steam deck LCD and get the OLED instead.
Steam Deck LCD version is an okay early access machine but not worth the money when the OLED exists.

Modern phones have a "do not disturb" button. You don't even need to get to the settings in order to turn everything off.

I think the dual screen attachment only really makes sense for 3DS emulation, most 3DS games aren't touch-heavy (or use touch at all). It's a capacitive touchscreen like modern smartphones and not a resistive one like the DS family so it's gonna be fucking dogshit for that kind of touch input. Until the day we get a plastic nibbed stylus and a slightly sunk-in screen again, comfortable touchscreen games are fantasy

It all depends on what you plan to emulate.

Just bought a Miyoo Mini Plus on FB marketplace for $20 and it's been really good for handheld stuff. Gameboy, GBA, Game Gear, and so on. Playing NES/SNES works just fine, it just feels a bit off since those games usually warrant a bigger display or a larger control layout (like wall jumping in Super Metroid is really hard on this thing).

It can handle anything up to about PS1 era, but in the Gameboy form factor, some games feel worse. Battery life is really good, plus with the Miyoo devices, you generally can replace the battery without having to open the thing and solder wires together. (depends on model)

Why would you have multiple if one does everything you need?
Why spend more when you can... spend less?
I have an anbernic chinkheld, a Switch and a Deck. I don't use all three, I just use one, the better one. The Switch is now gathering dust, and I don't even know where my chinkheld went to be quite honest. It's somewhere I guess.

If I had to buy one now and would want to settle for PS1, N64 and some Dreamcast games at the most I'd get a Vortex F5:

I always find hilarious how tendies complain about chinkhelds when the Switch 2 is a mid-range tablet from like 2019 made in China.

I have Switch online purely to play multiplayer games, I don't bother to play old games on it at all. That's what emulators are for.

Should have been a given since they're known to refuse RMAs or delay you for ridiculous reasons on any sort of warranty. It's why you go through AliExpress for everything, never the direct stores.
