Why do MMORPGs feel so lonely and empty now? It seemed like only a short while ago you could download some random shovelware MMO and most towns and areas would be bustling with players. Now even in the most popular MMORPGs on the market, nearly every location is devoid of players except for a few. What happened?

People are weird and don't talk anymore. In 2006 you could walk up to a random player in Runescape and hit it off. Now everyone is on Discord and games are overly moderated so just calling someone a retard gets you in trouble. So nobody says anything outside of guild chat or discord.

Matchmaking, quest markers, braindead gameplay, etc killed all the need for social interactions. MMOs are just single player games where you can show off your whale skin of the month to poorfags.

MMOs definitely did not feel this dead in 2019. Covid helped it limp along for another few years but it hasn't been the same since. Not sure what you get out of being so aggressively dishonest.

if you didnt make friends before 2021, you never will again. you simply lost the window to have relations to anyone real
i hope you have some genuine friends for the future

That's not true, plenty of games that aren't MMORPGs are fine for socialization. That however doesn't explain why I simply don't see MMORPGs reflect their population in-game as much as I used to anymore. It's not about making friends or anything, it's about why I hardly see the other players like I used to.

just a thought but maybe it has to do with the rising popularity of life service games? I can imagine a good chunk of people who used to play MMOs to fill their need for a game that "goes on forever" moved to fortnite and co...
in other words MMOs became a much more niche genre than a while ago

I think you mean live service, and you're absolutely right. If I'm a Dota player, then I can't play WoW while playing Dota. I did play WoW in the past, but I've never played two games at once. If WoW seems dead, then it's because people are playing other games.

Play wow hardcore.
Literally the only last good MMO due to the HC mechanic.
>even low lv zones are full of players constantly
>your decisions matter much more
>most people will thank you or at least /thanks /cheer even if you place a buff on them while running past
>people group up and plan together even for normally "easier" quests
>every new good item feels like a huge milestone
>doing professions early is actually a good idea and feels super rewarding
>people chatting in generals of low lv zones (nobody does that in normal wow)
Normal WoW is a numba-go-up rat race for knuckledraggers and so is non-HC classic for the most part.
But damn, hardcore classic is such a fucking fresh experience. The world actually feels like an MMO with other people who you interact and play with.

People talk just not in games anymore. Everyone's on Discord. Sure, back in the day you had your TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, etc. but this was not the norm people used to communicate. Every game was its own eco system.

The inevitable sanding of the rough edges. Game needs to have annoying parts that make all the good ones stand out all the more. Imagine actually waiting in a queue with others players to get your quest shit, for example.

Because the social aspect is entirely optional. You only need people for end game raiding or PvP. Look at something like EVE where social integration is a big deal. Not to say that has its own problems, but I'll take it over only interacting with people when I absolutely need them to get new loot.

Zoomers are weird discord only trannies who can't handle human interaction like normal people.
