That 60 FOV is actually the distance between the player and a TV with console. Its why it is a low FOV since it's not in your face like a monitor is.

I usually do 100 but sometimes 90 in those games where it fisheyes more. I'm not sure why it's like that, you'd think it would be the same in every game but it's not. Minecraft looks really weird at 100, like it stretches out too close to the center of the screen or something.

Most games were not made with higher FOV in mind. Although the Slider was a must in PC games, most games didn't take that into account. In fact, many PCs couldn't handle higher FOVs' you can count on your hands how many games are made for higher FOV.

I'll let the faggots ruin their aim with these shitty fovs. They don't even notice they're only making their target smaller and harder to aim at, while destroying how the side of their screen looks. Just garbage all around where there are alternatives like manipulating the field of view itself which can go a low way, or use one of the perspective correction shaders.

120 on 16:9 goldsrc games
Low fov is only necessary to make out details when enemies are hidden faraway in cover with no silleuette and movement, which is resolved by guns with ads / scope or a little fov toggle button or just move faster to get close.
The center compaction and side stretching are good features to fit the retinal which has a narrow center cone of high density and wide range of low density in receptors. Given just enough pixels for silleuette for locking and much wider cone of tunnel vision, it's impossible to try to stop and take in extra details in a shootout while letting the target out of lock of a widened cone.
With widening the view also provides a greater range where eye movement and snap locking can occur.
Slight elevation like jumping on boxes while looking down a little gives so much info on space.
It only stops working when you can't make out the silleuette at the center even when focused.

High FOV looks better on ultrawide screens.
I don't like super high FOV, everything is all stretched out. My monitor IRL is probably about 80 degrees of my natural FOV, so 80 FOV in game would feel most natural. Just get some measuring tape and a triangle calculator you can see what fov your monitor actually is IRL.

Somehow exactly 90 horizontal fov feels best for me, something about the straight angle view makes understanding my own movement and shooting easier and smoother. Not sure if it's some matter of learning or if it's something to do with the simpler geometric shape of the view cone.

It was done for a number of reasons. Most people playing console games are doing so on a TV across the room, a wider FOV would make it much harder to actually see anyone. It's also done for performance reasons, Halo 3 did all it could to maintain a steady(albeit low) framerate on the 360. A more narrow FOV means they can get more aggressive with culling everything off-screen.

You're wrong about performance. It can be adjusted with lower quality LODs and other distance related optimizations. That's how it is on PC, you can change it and see that your game doesn't draw as far when your FOV is higher.
