I cleaned out my C drive in order to partition it for a mint dual boot. But then I stopped myself and though, what the fuck am I actually gonna do on linux? Watch youtube videos that I already do on 10 and my phone? Have a slightly harder time pirating shit? Be unable to install zBrush or Maya or Substance Painter for work?

I kinda want to give it a chance but I also don't know why I want to go through the hassle. It's an incredibly odd feeling.

dxvk has always been a meme. the performance hit is never worth it and you lose the ability to use MSAA, SGSSAA if you are a nvidia chad. amd doesn't have a way to force msaa at all in old games lmao!

Considering 90% of the time Linux is used to boot old ass hardware I'd say so.

You probably run a greater risk of Linux not supporting recent hardware than the reverse.

the main problem is that the amd drivers on windows and linux do not work the same, so they both have different issues and interact with games differently.
they could probably keep supporting it, but the amount of people running dxvk in native windows is likely a minority and they just don't want to keep troubleshooting windows only issues.

Linux on HDD has the exact same drawbacks as that would on Windows, your boot time, application start up times and load times are slow. You can however use BTRFS and that may increase performance with compression enabled somewhat. Provided you can avoid power going out unexpectedly. BTRFS is kind of dangerous with random power cuts.

Two years ago I tried this meme as on Windows through WSL2.
I got a new archival HDD and wanted to try something more interesting than NTFS and Veracrypt.
Just the idea of on-the-fly compression was fresh to me.
It fine, but ultimately it was cumbersome to run WLS2, mount the drive, unlock it and connect to it from Windows every time.
But tinkering like this is fun.

Valve couldn't afford to without expanding substantially. The reason SteamOS works is because it's supported in a very limited capacity on limited hardware. It's not designed to be general purpose OS, it doesn't install packages that aren't needed nor does it allow user to install system packages without doing completely unsupported stuff.

You should see how many people brick Arch Linux because that's not locked down like SteamOS.

Windows will kill your linux dualboot eventually anyway. Better to install it on another drive.

The only good AMD drivers are on linux. I'd advise against buying amjeet GPUs in general though

I'm on my second AMD GPU now and had no issues with them. Used to have Nvidia cards before that and had no issues with them as well.
It literally makes no difference.

I've never had to chroot into my system despite bricking my novideo driver more than once before. I wonder if it's because I have my IGP which works even when the novideo driver bricks.

reinstalling grub with boot-repair on a live cd takes about 2 minutes.

This is exactly why Valve made everything readonly by default on SteamOS. Itโ€™s idiot-proofing. The moment you let people sudo pacman -Syu blindly or start tinkering with mesa git builds just to squeak out 2 extra FPS in Elden Ring, youโ€™ve got a support nightmare. Theyโ€™re not designing for enthusiasts who know their way around chroots and Timeshift backups, theyโ€™re targeting Steam Deck normies who think "Wayland" is a new Marvel character.

I don't really see the point of dual booting or other half arsed shit either.
I built a new computer and installed only Linux from the start. It ain't the same as Windows on my old computer but fuck if I care, I didn't want to go through debloating Windows again nor did I want to use my old install which was on a shitty SATA SSD.

>Does Linux work well on HDD's?
Amazingly well compared to Windows. You see, Linux allows modern file system types such as EXT4 and BTRFS. You don't really need to know the details, just that they actually work. Windows, on the other hand, uses a retarded dogshit system called NTFS. Its been broken in severe ways since the 90's and it still is to this day due to backward compatibility restraints. The most obvious flaw is fragmenting. You see, HDDs do not allow random access, so it only reads data sequentially. A sane person would quickly realize that blocks that make up a file should also be stored sequentially. But NTFS just tries to store them in the first empty blocks it sees. And if there is another file in the way, then it splits the file up and stores them in several places across the disk. And once fragmenting starts, it tends to cause more. This is why Windows machines on HDDs slow to a crawl after a year or so without running a special program to defragment the disk periodically.

Yakuza 6 and I'm willing bet every DX9 game runs better on DXVK than natively on Windows.
