Terraria is held back by being 2D, it NEEDS to become 3D to continue growth. Put in the DOOM style sprites if you have to, but Terraria would work so much better in so many ways if the worlds were 3D.

More creative building, more replay value, larger worlds, more sophisticated and immersive combat, think of the possibilities for a sequel such as this. No, this does not mean it has to become a Minecraft clone. Terraria doesn't even use voxels. Not the same thing at all.

A 3D terraria would have more of a build system like fallout 4, not minecraft.

Ironically enough, 2D makes it a lot easier to have highly mobile combat like Terraria's. The ability to attack in one direction and move in another while knowing where you're going is critical to the fun of Terraria fights

Agreed. People suck off Risk of Rain 2, but I feel like it lost much of what I liked about the original because of the transition to 3D.

I think going top-down instead of sideview is enough to create fun building and help with immersion. Settlements in Necesse feel like actual settlements and you don't have to either walk through houses or jump over them, you can just go around them like you're supposed to.
Bonus points for still adhering to >>714693732 's point because you can still see a good bit around you.

>it NEEDS to become 3D to continue growth
Why does it need to grow?
Why can't we just enjoy something that was made?

>NPCs casually approach the Terraria MC
They have some balls, the Terrarian is straight up fucked in the head and with more than enough power to back up all his megalomania.
