Yes, there are certain occasions when it can be grammatically correct, but using they/them every single time just causes incohesion and confusion.
There were many times, especially during Chapter 4, where they were referring to The Roaring Knight or Kris and I thought they were talking about some other group of people. The Knight is a known entity and practically a formless monster, so using "it" would have been perfectly sufficient in most cases. Kris is a known person, regardless of having a "questionable" gender (let's all be real, he is completely male coded and there is practically no room for error here), so most of the time using his name would have been better than saying they/them.
It really ruins an otherwise well-written story and dialogue and I'm not sure why Toby insisted on the whole pronoun schtick other than pandering or just ignorance.
