Probably a bunch of shapeshifters who's face change based on what they say, which can change wildly from second to second.
The same "Anon" could be smiling and happy discussing a degenerate topic and then get an extremely detailed pissed off face discussing how a certain company is or isn't the best.

It's funny how despite Kris' gender supposedly being ambiguous, they were very obviously written as male for most of the plot

What's funny about it? This is pretty normal for an RPG MC. He doesn't talk much, so it's very easy to not specify the gender explicitly in Japanese (and other languages too).
If it released in the 2000s, westoids wouldn't be shitting and pissing themselves about muh gendershit but they would just think of it as one of the many quirks in the game.

The biggest reason the "Kris goes by they/them" thing was shilled was because Toby allegedly corrected a guy during the Deltarune charity stream before Chapter 2 when he called Kris a "he". But even then, Toby didn't even correct him, he just referred to Kris as "they" after the guy referred to Kris as a "he". So it could very well just be Toby making his character ambiguous.
And at any rate, that's good for the story Deltarune's trying to tell. Kris's gender being ambiguous means everybody has a chance to self-insert as them before Kris pulls the rug under the player's feet. Even after that, you see plenty of people headcanoning Kris to be as close to themselves as possible. It's why you can see both Kris looking like an alpha chad, a twink, or something out of Utena.

If Toby wanted Kris to be read as male he would have just used he/him ngl. It's clearly meant to be ambiguous, intentionally so. Whether that's because of non-binary tranny shit or just self-insert or whatever is up to the player, but if Kris was intended to be canonically "just" male Toby would have bothered to not go out of his way to not use gendered pronouns. It's not like a meaningful number of people aren't gonna play if he did that, certainly back in Chapter 1.
