you are not wrong but not fully right, deltarune was originally going to release with chapter 1 as the demo and the rest of the game as a single package instead of drip feed chapters like it is now, so kris had no gender so players could project into since the "twist" wouldn't be revealed yet (see how many people thought the end of chapter 1 scene was chara and not kris)
toby actually went out of his way to not use they/them once in chapter 1 (people point to the prison scene with susie but in that one she is referring to both kris and ralsei)
