They pandered to le Reddit crowd hard. Yakuza has always been a gritty crime drama game. But because you only played OG 1 and 2, that's the intended vision. The later games started to have zanier stories with more silly things sprinkled in the games. Im talking about ridiculous substories and the like. It really got the ball running with Yakuza 0 which was everyone's gateway Yakuza back then.. that game has some really wacky minigames and substories

Yakuza 7 introduced a new cast with an overhauled system to turn based which gave em way to make even MORE silly and wacky shenanigans. The crime drama is still there, but you can just tell things changed after Nagoshi left

Nah. It's like a 6.5/10, I've played a number of games better than it this year (even more if you count remasters like NG2 Black and VF5 REVO). Split Fiction, Fatal Fury CotW, TMNT Tactical Takedown, Lilac 0 and Fuga 3 are all better in that 8/10 range and NG Ragebound is about to be the new frontrunner in a couple weeks assuming the demo represents its quality accurately.
