I want to play a mecha game, how are Mechwarrior 5 and Mechwarrior 5 Clans?

Mechwarrior 5 clans is okay, Mecha Break just released and is pretty fun but mostly multiplayer. Armored Core 6 is another option.

MW5 is a fine starting point. The other games either have hardware or software compatibility issues so that alone makes it the easiest place to start. Mercenaries has a ton of mods to adjust things to your liking.

tbf all the other white background images I saw had him facing the camera like the okawara art and it looked weird. Origin sucked. The redesign itself I think is mostly fine though, pretty much the same concept as the old MGs.

Mw5 and Mw5 Clans are very different from most mech games as they feel more like tanks. Positioning is everything.
Most of the fun comes from minmaxing your build before deployment and trying out different mechs to see what they can do.
This plays into the major differences with the games with Mw5 being more of an open sandbox while Mw5 clans being more story driven.
Best thing to do is try out Mechwarrior online since it also plays like the other games but being an online multiplayer skirmish game but its free with pay2win components.
Alternative is to play some of the older mw games like 4 or 2 if you are patience enough to try and get them running on your pc.

My Google-fu tells me Clans is more story driven, is that a good thing?

bullshit, MW5 modded is super fun. MW5 clans doesn't need to be modded to be super fun, but the newer Ghost Bear campaign was better than the original in my opinion.

One of the biggest complaints about Mw5 Mercs is that the generated missions get quite repetative but the actual curated missions from the dlc packs are pretty fun.
Mw5 Clans is all missions so they all feel fresh to play. When it comes to the story its no Shakespeare but its at least follows the lore despite not being canon.
