I've played the 2D games and XY at least three times, further games are shit so I only played them once or twice
I only started appreciating genwun after all this. Might not be perfect but as a package it's pretty good.

For all the nostalgiafagging surrounding Gen I and KANTOOOOOOOO, I do actually like the overworld's structure having to work around numerous roadblocks after the first two badges that helped make it more interconnected as you cleared them up. There's only really a handful of narrative events, mostly dealing with Team Rocket. Granted, it also makes the region feel quite small.
