Critics who treat "4chan" as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be 4chan themselves. To be concerned about being 4chan, to admire the 4chan because it is 4chan, to blush at the suspicion of being Reddit; these things are the marks of Reddit and Tumblr. And in Reddit and Tumblr they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Redditors ought to want to grow. But to carry on into 4chan or even into Twitter this concern about being 4chan is a mark of really arrested development. When I was Reddit, I read Reddit threads in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am 4chan I read them openly. When I became an anon I put away Reddit things, including the fear of Reddit and the desire to be very 4chan.
