What kind of fun hating person are you? How in the fuck can you see a spaceship or a jet fighter blowing up a bunch of shit with some banger music playing and think it's "boring"?

The fact that the only aspect of SHMUP you can point out as positives are shallow set dressing stuff is telling.
The core gameplay is just wiggling back and forth to avoid projectiles while hitting the attack button as fast as you can. The core defining gameplay that makes a SHMUP is boring.
It doesn't matter what you swap out the sprites with, be it a jet, or a magical girl, or a fairy, or whatever, that doesn't change the dull gameplay.

reductio ad absurdum
how the fuck do people get good at shmups? I played that shmup roguelike Dunkey shilled and I couldn't even complete one single run on hard. The final boss(es) just kept raping me

Mixture of learning the level and learning how to react to patterns. Even the best shmup player needs to learn the levels to start doing high score runs
Im about to lose my mind, I just found out I missed the egg in the 2nd dark world in chapter 4, so now I have to reload and go back FOR THE THRID TIME. All because I couldn't find the draing thing in the dark.

Yeah SHMUP really feels like a genre that peaked early and then just...never did anything interesting after that? Like sure it's still getting games but they're almost never anything interesting or unique. Probably why the core fanbase for them is so small and absolutely obsessed with the concept of difficulty (because there's nothing else there)

Too much Cave inspired shit. Sure you get other games like Hydorah that takes inspiration from Gradius/Life Force, but not having a gimmick and just dodging bright purple and green bullets while scrolling vertically isn't very interesting. Might as well just play a Cave game which they were inspired from.

That's the tragedy of it, really. Devs spend millions crafting these massive open worlds with "emergent gameplay" and it all boils down to holding forward until a checkbox lights up. At least shmups respect your time-you're playing the moment you press start, not after 20 minutes of simulated hiking and picking flowers.

That's just not true. If you think that there are too many shmups inspired by CAVE then just dont play all the ones that aren't? Any Siter Skain game, Hellsinker, Dezatopia or Mecha Ritz, Devil Blade Reboot, CRS 68k, Eschatos or Ginga Force just off the top of my head. There are so many fucking shmups out there.
So this is new, if you save the game, then exit, a way back to the light world opens up. Only shows up if you relaunch the game. How many of you missed this?
