It helps that most creators of that era did things in standard definition, rather than HD, so it lessened the processing burden on atypical, affordable Japanese home PCs of that era.
I can't imagine trying to capture all that footage in a far more barely compressed codec like DivX through a Dazzle video capture device on 120-240GB HDDs, and working off of that.
Really puts into perspective how much we take it for granted, and how much I see artists struggle now with using video proxies on NVMe SSDs.
