Throughout its development, Starbound had a bunch of ideas that barely worked and lacked consistency, so overall it was more about quantity rather than quality. In the end, they cut many features and mechanics, boiling down the exploration to barren planets, annoying enemies that aren't fun to even look at, worthless loot, and forcing you to participate in its "story" that has no right to exist, especially since bosses are locked behind story progression. Building serves no purpose either, and you have to visit a ton of planets just to find new resources to build with. This is unlike Terraria with its content bloat, since most of the post-hardmode stuff kind of fits in, at least mechanically. There's also a sense of progression without working through an insufferable quest line, as you take on more challenging enemies/bosses and find or craft more powerful weapons by overcoming previous challenges found while exploring the world. Finding the resources to build with isn't as much of a chore because all of them exist in the current world (except for corruption or crimson stuff, which depends on your choice and for which you can create a new world).
