>"oh no I'll have to delete a bunch of games from my SSD now"
>"actually nope! it's only 40 GB"
Riddle me this, how the fuck is this game only 40 GB with TWO expansions, one adding an entire new area with a city while other games that look SIGNIFICANTY worse, run worse and have less content weight over 120 GB nowadays.
It makes no fucking sense, does it?

Devs legitimately either don't give a shit anymore, are genuinely fucking incompetent or are competing for your space like CoD does. Videogames have not only stagnated but actively degraded over the last decade, and anyone arguing otherwise is either a clueless moron or an industry plant. The games that actually utilise modern hardware properly (that are also the only ones brought up when this topic is discussed) both in a technical and an artistic sense are a minority. And the crazy part is that this opinion is considered controversial because most of the replies you'll get are "how game stagnated if polygons quadrupled???"

Several factors but it boils down to a few, it benefits you as a game developer to deliberately bloat your game's total filesize as much as possible because when someone installs your game and wants to keep your game playable on their system it creates a friction point where they have to delete something limiting how many competitors for your attention you can have installed at one time.

In past times physical media was a limiting factor, if you went over 8gb you needed to include another DVD which means less profit margin, so you were incentivized to keep your games to one or maybe two discs, now everything is digital so it doesn't make a difference if the game is 40gb or 400gb.

For some reason it feels like games stopped progressing visually after 2015.

These past 10 years have been disaster for game visuals. MGSV, Witcher 3, Arkham Knight all look much better than their 2020s equivalents and the real kicker is those game run like a dream while also looking better.

I want to blame global illumination, its supposed to be so much more realistic lighting model but the overall effect it brings is just muddy lighting at the cost of most of your performance and a massive increase in VRAM usage and the other major innovation in the past 10 years was fake frames, fake resolution, AI generation slop.

They force you to delete game after playing it so you won't have it "backed up" or "stored" in your device.
That way whenever they are going to release a "remastered" version of said game, they'll take down the previous one first.
By making games bloated af they have a chance to "force you into buying new remastered version of game because you deleted previous game so you could play another bloated game".
Simple strategy

I think MGSV was the last time a game impressed me with its visuals. That's not to say it looks better than any other game, its just the last time a game wowed me, and it did it not only by how good it looked, but also by how well it performed while looking that good.

This is only true because indieslop is the only vidya that is half decent anymore. Every 2010's era AAA studio has just completely implode with very few exceptions.

Even among indieslop, some people just can't into Unreal Engine. Gray Zone Warfare looks absolutely fucked compared to something like Red River Incursion. And DLSS is so terrible, I don't understand how people can tolerate the weird artifacting that comes with it.

In US, most reasonably priced internet connections have data caps. If the game is big, consuner wants to keep it installed because redownloading may eat up your internet quota for an entire month. Thus he is more likely to play it again later and chance of him buying microtransactions again goes up. For EU and states with unlimited data it works the other way around: bigger games get deleted faster because it frees up space for a dozen other games and you can redownload huge game with practically no repercussions.
Yes, this is annoying and worse for everyone buying games, but it makes more profit.
There are tech reasons too

It's because there's no visual difference between a 40,000 triangle model and a 400,000 triangle model when it belongs to a generic footsoldier mob that you kill before it ever gets close. Ever since the mid 2010s we hit the peak of what you can perceive as a visual improvement during normal gameplay when everything (including the camera) is in motion. Since then it's just been Nvidia simps jerking each other off over their $2000 photo modes. Nothing more.
