I like small screens and have always liked small screens. Over 100 million people agree with me that small screens are great.

It's not about portability, though that's nice. It's about the small screen. If you don't get it, you should try it out. If you still don't get it, it's not for you.

There are games for big screens and games for small screens.
I tried to play curse crackers on my monitor and that shit felt unplayable unless I played on windowed mode. Imagine playing games on windowed mode.
Then I tried it on a handheld and it was just much better. It's appropriate for small screens.
Likewise I tried RDR1 on the Switch. The small screen did not do it justice at all. I needed to play on a big screen. A reason why I'll never understand all these people wanting a handheld for the latest AAA titles. Makes no sense to me.

I would love to play the Switch on my way to work but unfortunately I live in America so public transportation is a survival horror experience because of certain "people" and not like in Japan, so I have to drive to work, and self-driving cars are a complete meme.

My work sends me out to other cities/states to train on a regular basis. They put me up in a hotel usually for a week (sometimes more) at a time.

I do not want to go out on the town.
I do not want to socialize with the colleagues from work I meet here and will never see again.
I do not want to watch 8+ hours of TV.

Having a gaming laptop, Steam Deck, Switch is the best option for me in this case. My PC or consoles are too big to carry, and are a pain to deal with if I have to fly.

As you point out, the "things", there's plenty of shit that people do outside, but someone insecure enough will find them weird because most people aren't doing it.
For instance, taking pictures with a camera instead of a phone. You'd think it's a normal thing, but where I live most people don't bother with cameras, they just use their phones. They'll take pictures of sunsets with their phones, they'll do anything with their phones. So someone insecure might feel very out of place by pulling out a camera, like it's somehow a nerd or a niche thing or in some people's estimation, outdated stuff.
In the same way playing a handheld outside might seem like you just cannot spend time outside gaming. With smartphones existing, people think phone games are just enough, and people who are insecure might think that it's easier to conceal the fact they're playing a game out on public if they're just doing it on the device everyone carries.

The entire point of mobile gaming is being able to play it anywhere when you want and not needing ot be tethered to wall.

DS Lite played an entire library of amazing games on TWO consoles, and battery life was 15+ hours.
