>Unique and charming art-style helmed by Sawaki Takeyasu (Devil May Cry, Okami, Fatal Frame 4)
>Interesting subject matter tackled in a such way that it doesn't veer into either preachy territory or full-blown fedora tipping territory
>Notable cast of actors in both English (Jason Isaacs, Christopher Obi) and Japanese (Shinichiro Miki, Ryusei Nakao)
>Promoted adequately, being featured several times at E3, Gamescom and TGS
>Well-received critically
>dialogue effectively became a really weird meme on Japanese forums and messageboards

Why do it flop so badly even by the standards of fairly niche Japshit? It reportedly only made back around a tenth of the budget, with Ignition seeing so little in the IP afterwards that they let Takeyasu buy it back with his own money.

It was Nier done right before Automata, only, it didn't have a sexy robot girl wearing a short skirt so nobody played it, remember kids, pretentiousness is pushed easier with sex appeal

its not very good
the core gameplay of beat em up takes a backseat every single area
its based on abrahamic nonsense so its not appealing to people with foreskins
the game feels half baked on every level and you'll be glad to finish it while dreading playing it like most 7th gen titles

Pre-8th generation games are depressing. Early Access is controversial but it was one of the best things about the 2010s. Minecraft changed the industry for the better

It's just not particularly fun to play, which is a shame. I thought I was stumbling into another gem like Child of Eden when I played it. As a visual spectacle it's still worth experiencing though. The game also reminds me of Malicious which is one of my favorite games from that era, pure lvdo.
How was the dungeon crawler sequel they made to this?

Yeah, I remember playing it and beating it, and while I enjoyed it, it's not particularly a good game. Once you get past the presentation, the actual gameplay is very shallow and a lot of the ideas just aren't fleshed out that well. The narrative and visuals also aren't enough to carry the whole thing.
It's an interesting game, but I completely understand why nobody knows about it and even among the people who have played it it never reached cult classic status or anything.

It's alright, basically bootleg SMT. The story from memory is batshit insane and involves Big G manipulating a power struggle between Cthulu and Ra.

Should I play it again?

>play demo before release
>what the fuck is this shit
>try it again some decade later with a different view on it
>it's different, somewhat refreshing
>drop it early as I wasn't in the best mood

Seems like it could be a 7/10

It's not bad. I kinda wish the game was more like Fury instead though. It's a visual and story spectacle.
