Just same tracks with same optimal routes. Sometimes you get fucked by bad luck.
It's not an interactive game.
It has no engaging narrative.
Music is mid at best.
Open world is a gimmick.
Graphics are horrible compared to modern standards.
The whole game is built around memorization and only variable is luck, aka having no skill requirement.

It barely qualifies as a video game.

Do you realize that without smuggling the mega mushroom by keeping up with the pack due to wall jumping and rail grinding it wouldn't have been possible to dodge the shock? It's often better to keep an item that you know you need later, than to spam it and hope you're getting what you need in the next item set.

No, it's calculated. Usually, when someone holds a shock, they will use it right around the time when the pack reaches a major shortcut. It prevents other players from using the shortcut or puts them in a shitty position if they get shocked on the off-road because they won't have any speed boosts to get past the terrain. It also puts the shock holder into the perfect position to use their own speed boost items to utilize the shortcut themselves. When people intentionally smuggle items that provide shock immunity to the end of the race they're banking on that scenario. Also, very often people at the end of the pack chain their shock into the last item set so a good way to dodge a shock is to wait for the last item set for the end of the race before you chain your invincibility item into it instead of wasting it early.

Any racing game that punishes you for doing well is not about skill. The optimal strategy is to not win for as long as possible then try to win at the end. In a real race the most you would do is not overtake one position and push when your opponent is at a disadvantage.
