I find it somewhat ironic that at one point everyone was for digital media. People were so focused on having everything digital because of "convenience", but now that companies are becoming scumbags and are making us not own our games or just having everything be always online, people are flocking back to physical media.

Digital games were more convinient but most importantly cheaper. Now? I can buy a physical game cheaper than from Steam, even with a Steam sale going on.

I doubt that you can buy a physical modern game for less money compared to buying it on Steam with a steam sale. Older games, sure, but modern? I doubt that.

I think that we just focused too much on "convenience" and we didn't stop to think that these guys could just wipe our games and not be legally liable.

Only thing I wish would improve is the general design of cases.

>>714782458
To play the game at all requires buying into expensive hardware that you may or may not even want to begin with.

I say these things as someone that generally prefers owning physical copies of games. I actually like the feedback that comes with having cases, carts, and CDs. But the digital media boogeyman is also kind of silly.

Has been for awhile.

>bbbuh doesitgay.org??

I anticipate all my shelf ornaments being useless if the servers go and you should too.

But also consider this. Even consoles where you have the physical game in it's entirety, how often do you use that physical game if you have it at all. If you want to play a PS2 or Gamecube game you either hack a Wii or use PCSX2 or whatever. The average person isn't paying $100 for a 20+ year old game disc. And the same will be true later.

Also, Xbox 360 and PS3 are still perfectly functional online with Xbox 360 even getting a dashboard update within the last month. It will be many many years before you'll need to resort this.

Elden Ring Elrdtree edition is 60€ while on PC it’s 80€, not on sale. If you were to buy the base game which is on sale (36€) and the DLC separately (40€) you can get it down to 76€. Still more expensive for less.

Xbox games rarely use UHD Blu Ray, the discs are meant to be read in all available Xbox consoles right now, even an old ass Xbox One, as it only serves as key to start a download.

It is a PS5 discs that are more likely to be UHD Blu Rays, they do contain data on the disc but only start the installation process, but it can be an offline process.

You're assuming devs get the remaining 70%. This is a breakdown of physical copies, but you can just group when Steam's 30% covers. Devs, unless they self-publish and own all the rights, get tiny percentage from every sale.

I just refuse to buy digital. If I am I can never get any money back, once you buy a digital game you can never resell it, the company makes 100% of what you spent.

With a physical game, at least I have the option of re-selling it once I finish playing it. The industry wants to eliminate them not because digital games are more convenient and everyone has an internet connection to download them now. It's because they don't have to spend the money manufacturing and shipping physical games, and as an added bonus the people that buy a digital asset can't re-sell it thus the publisher / dev doesn't have to worry about a fraction of their profits being circulated in the form of used game sales which they don't make any money from.

Steam grew by selling publisher's games for next to nothing. And publishers allowed it because up until that point they were making $0 off their back catalogs. But then they realised that the price for games was becoming $5-10, so addicted were Steam's userbase to cheap games that selling new releases for $40 was impossible. So they told Gaben he wasn't getting any more $1 infinite keys for shit and prices had to rise to accommodate. And then they raised the price of new games to $50, then $60 and now $70+Digital Deluxe Edition tax so that they can "discount" for the many sales to bring it down to a price that would have been too expensive years ago but is now "good." And it fucking worked.
/v/ anons proudly display their summer sale baskets of $20+ "sale" trash and ask if they should buy AAA-slop for $35 because it's never cheaper than that.

>How are they going to do that on my offline console?
Digital certificates. Anything past PS3 is cryptographically signed and the OS won't load something that doesn't have a valid signature. The PS3 also accepts updates from discs, same as the PS4 and PS5 and no doubt switch 2. So *if* they wanted to invalidate your physical offline copy of stellar blade, they absolutely could release a certificate revocation that comes along on your brand new copy of Death Stranding 2 that you put into your offline console completely unaware. And once the cert revocation list is installed, short of a major OS exploit, you ain't fixing it. Bang, your physical game is now a paperweight until you connect your console to the internet to get the Sony-California approved patch.
They haven't pulled the trigger on this yet. But they absolutely have the power to do so. We saw that for a fact when the PS3 had that leap day bug that marked every cert on your system as invalid for a day.

Yes, they are "fake." If they can't fit it on 1 disc, use 2 discs. If you are unwilling to do that, you should be required to inform the customer that you've release a fake physical, which Nintendo at least does force publishers to do. Microsoft does not, and Sony seems to be more of a "we'd like you to, but we won't force you to."
FF7R comes on 2 discs on PS4. PS5 games can come on 128GB 4-layer discs. Size is no excuse, it's just down to cheap publishers fucking you over and the willingness for sony/microsoft/nintendo to willingly allow 0.5beta releases to be burned to cart/disc for sale with a mandatory day 0 patch to bring it up to 1.0release.
