It would've become a "forgotten gem", similar to what the RE1 Remake was for 13 years.
The 2002 remake was extremely well received, technical marvel, that started the whole remaking boom as we know it. But before Dolphin emulator got good enough in the early 2010s, it was like a holy grail of all RE-fans, requiring wasting some real dough to be even accessible.
For those who weren't even around yet, Mikami made an idiotic deal with the Nintendo in the early 2000s, making all new main-line RE games GC exclusives. This birthed REm1, RE0 and finally RE4, alongside with some quick ports of classic RE2-3.
Not so surprisingly, the sales were not impressive, since Ninty was literally the "kiddie system", where as all the horror / mature game fans got PS2 and/or PC. GC didn't even have a DVD player to attract normies, so the game was over before it started.
RE4 did okay on GC, but it only started printing money 8 months later, when Capcom sacked Mikami, and released a (shoddy but functional) PS2 port.
