Why do people pretend to like this boring piece of shit? I enjoyed other boomerslop like Deus Ex but literally nothing about System Shock 2 was remotely good

It's one of those games people think pretending to like will give them cred.

Another one is Vampire MTB.

Out of curiosity, were you aware of the SS1 remake before it released?

The sad truth is that first (med-sci) and penultimate (satan's colonoscopy) levels are the worst part of the game, so it both filters people at the start and discourages them from actually finishing it.
My best advice is to not engage with any of the gimmicks (hacking, psy, etc.), go Standard Weapons, Strength, Endurance, Agility and play it like FPS. It's pretty short game, you can beat it in a day.

Well the answer seems clear to me. The remake's development was catastrophically lengthy and inefficient for Nightdive's revenue model. I'd call them retarded to ever make their own game again.

Like the other anon sort of implies, the first remake had a rocky development; it took like a fucking decade to come out. The original was too archaic as well. The enhanced edition helped, but a full remake was needed.
SS2 is much more tolerable, aged better. And now if they sort out the rights, they could easily shit out Thief 1+2 remasters.

User interface was ass, product of its time, the industry was still figuring things out and intuitive ergonomic controls were not invented yet. Couldn't fix that without remaking the whole thing.

I'm old enough to have enjoyed it when it was new and amazing. It honestly kind of ruined video games for me. Nothing else has ever made me go "This is leagues away better than anything else I've ever played."
Most shit is worse than it. The good shit is only good because they built on the shoulders of its greatness. And they didn't even go above and beyond.
Prey is just SS2 with a more convulated and far less interesting story with no antagonist. It's good, and would be absolutely goddamn jaw-dropping if I couldn't look over at SS2 and go "Well, its no SS2."
Sucks, fucking game ruined my ability to enjoy slop. It was just too good too early in my life.

It's kinda insane when you realize SS1 Remake is essentially just giving it SS2 gameplay, and that fps gameplay hasn't really advanced at all since SS2 released besides some keybind standardization. I know people like to joke about gaming stagnating, but when its in your face like this it is sad.

Guns build spotted.
You're supposed to slap everything to death with a wrench or rocket launchers.

It's not bad but it was juggling too much, stealth-action just doesn't work for level design, choose one or the other. Everyone judging it as "antiquated" or "an industry figuring things out" - no, that shit didn't work then and it doesn't work now and we fucking knew that since Wolfenstein. Not 3D. Wolfenstein.

I for one enjoy the novelty of a point and click adventure game combined with an FPS. But it isn't modern so it is automatically bad.

Bioshock evolved the gameplay little bit further by letting player wield weapon in one hand and "magic" in the other making alternating between the two more convenient, but yeah, not much else since.
