I bought the Wii version of TP at launch, it was the first Zelda I owned and the first console I bought with my own money. I never finished it and it plays out in my head like a fever dream. I remember the pacing was really weird.

I would say there is a greater incentive to explore because of the combat skills... but Nintendo realized that people would get stumped if they had to go out of their way to learn new movies, so they made them optional.

For me, Skyward Sword is tied with TOTK in "so bad I dropped the game" tier.
I don't really like BOTW that much but it was still good enough to finish. I even played through it twice. That gives me the authority to say BOTW is better than Wind Waker, too, but that's a little unfair considering WW is not a finished game.

If I were to replay, I'd likely save the majority of my exploration until all dungeon items are in your inventory... which won't take very long.

Wind Waker and Twilight definitely take the longest of any Zelda to actually get to the part where you can just play the fucking game (Skyward Sword just never reaches that point period). I know it's cool to hate on BotW+TotK here but they at least let you loose to play stuff extremely quickly. Twilight doesn't really stop bothering you until the third dungeon. Wind Wakers even worse in that you aren't allowed of the rails until the games HALFWAY OVER at the Tower of the Gods.

I love how ancient and desolate this Hyrule feels, everything outside of the castle and town looks abandoned and in disarray, everything just feels so old and like a far cry from this kingdom created and chosen by the gods.

The bridges are in terrible condition, there's ruins in random places, you straight up can't enter Gerudo desert, the original Kakariko has been abandoned for who knows how long and the newer Kakariko is hardly any better, the only place that still has some beauty to it is Zora's domain and Lake Hylia which basically belongs to the Zoras.
