How is the Xbox 360 not retro now that it's almost 20 years old? The NES was considered retro in 2000 when it was 15.

Retro is a style from an age
Not just the system being old

We hit the point of diminishing returns with the 7th gen so even though the 360 is old as shit at this point it's not perceived that way.

It IS retro. DX9/DX10/DX11 are officially considered to be "legacy APIs" on PC. DXVK exists precisely to turn those retro APIs to something usable by a modern API (Vulkan).

Xbox 360 is DirectX 9+. It has features from DX10 (unified shaders) but not all the features.

this
When /vr/ was first created, Dreamcast was only ~13 years old. It's not about amount of time, but the style of games before 2006-ish.

the style is the way it is because of the hardware/software age.

like xbox 360 games looked the way they did because the games were forward render instead of deferred render

This came out in 2007 running on hardware of the same time period. You can tell zoomers that this came out in 2025 if you hid the ATI logo.

I keep debating if I want to pick up a 360 or not, and then I go even further down the rabbit hole of whether or not I want to buy one and mod it, buy one that's modded already, or just suck it up and buy a bunch of games for cheap as chips.

By that time most of the kinds of games you played on the NES were too limited compared to the newest games of that time. Modern games are mostly the same as what the 360 had just with higher resolutions and more graphic details.

The only difference between a 360 game and games from current years is the resolution and frame rate. Other than that, no real graphics improvements where made from that era.

Technically it is retro, but in a practical sense, there hasn't been any major shift in the games or graphics since 7th gen.

One of the best selling games of 2025 is just a remaster of a 7th gen game.

Up here in Leafland they would send you a replacement console and never ask you to return it. So you get your fixed console and an extra console for free. I ended up getting 5 360s because of it. Fucking loved it.

I can't believe the only soft hack this has is temporary and only works 25% of the time, IBM really knew their shit.
The only thing I can give to Nintendo is that their consoles are easy to hack.

>How is the Xbox 360 not retro now that it's almost 20 years old?
Because

>internet connection
>HDMI port
>HDD built in and replaceable
>Wireless controller connection
>poor quality build controller compared to actual retro consoles
>updates and patches

Buy one thatโ€™s modded already, zero point owning physicals of it cause if you play the bigger games youโ€™re just gonna change disks every hour or so, wasnโ€™t looking forward to shit like that. What I did is I got a 2tb external SSD, placed everything on their and all the working and good OG XB games on the internal drive and just let er rip. Buy one off eBay, thereโ€™s this one Quebec*id who only sells one console per day for really fucking cheap like 120cad so you gotta catch him early, high quality job, repastes the thing, sets everything up for you but with a little research you can customize it for your own purposes. If you miss him heโ€™ll just have another one ready the next day. Good luck and have fun my man.

This is the real answer. If modern games were like what we thought SAO would be yes they would be retro. There really isn't much difference now and back then

??? this shit is easily fixed. Bad update and then format any given HDD + insert "official" firmware to be reckognized as such.

AFAIK it works with any HDD, it's with WD and Seagate that the console easily accepts them as official. Others require more fiddling to be used on their console

They're cheap by now, not a real problem. Never read someone that upgraded/added HDD to their 360 and had the drive bricked before

the jump between 7th to 9th gen consoles is a lot less than the jump between earlier gens. like 3rd to 4th was a huge jump, literally twice the power, 4th to 5th was literally another dimension in gameplay leap, and 5th to 6th we started getting photorealism but at SD, 6th to 7th we got photo realism to 1080 HD.. after that it's been much more minor upgrades. Yes you can tell the difference between a 2007 game vs a 2025 game, but the jump from a 2001 to 2007 game was much more dramatic.
