What do graphic drivers actually do?
How can software make my hardware better?
Anonymous No.714839046
When you first insert the hardware into your computer, it doesn't know what to do with it. You can verify in device manager in Windows or try to launch a game without a driver. The driver tells the GPU what to do by giving it commands. New commands and functions are added to these drivers which can improve things but also break older commands.

Drivers tell the card what to do, as in the drive it to play your games good. Better drivers make it do this job better.

your gpu also has bios updates like your mobo. updating can fix bugs or even improve performance.

Drivers are code that allows the operating system kernel to communicate with your PC's hardware. Without drivers, the kernel has to default to whatever built-in, generic support it has for your card which results in most of the features of the card going unutilized.

Drivers are an interface between your OS and your hardware. They contain instructions for your OS on how to communicate with your hardwaren and give commands to it.

>put car on dyno
>put in driver
>car is slower due to extra weight
WHAT THE FUCK?

If you wanted to go fast around a specific track would you hire a f1 driver who knows the track like the back of his hand or Bert?

Are drivers currently a mess for new GPUs on all sides currently or some shit?

not really, the modern state of drivers is pretty sane with few fuckups.
the only current problem is nvidia drivers are still proprietary which means that the linux support is ass, and nu-gamers are scared of AMD cards which makes the windows 11 situation funny.

You buy a slave he is a big black brute but also retarded and won't do a single thing on his own, he is the hardware.
You crack the whip and tell him what to do, you are the software.

Man those old gigabyte shrouds were so rustic and pretty.

Let's pretend that your GPU is comprised of 4 1GB pieces that are designed to work in tandem but they don't unless told to. With and without a driver installed the GPU won't know the difference between loading a single 1GB texture on 1 piece vs splitting the workload into 1/4 between all 4 pieces. One has a longer load time than the other and the driver tells the GPU when and how to split some of these things up. This is basically as dumbed down as I can explain it, sorry.

With a good driver a car can go fast without crashing.
