I bought Coiling Dragon because I found official translation for it and discovered that it's basically MMORPG autism. It's fun but it's not martial arts, more like what a chinese westaboo would write for a western fantasy setting.

Chingchongs have a bit of a stereotype of not having any human empathy or imagination, which obviously makes it dificult to make compelling media.
The fact it is often badly translated chinese does not help: some of the things which are happening you may well not understand because you don't understand some cultural background.

Like a character might be considered good because he follows traditional confucian values - which are not our own - but then he does something that technically dishonours his parents (a big no no) and so is suddenly overwhelmed with regret. And you're reading being like 'but that village of people you skinned alive was just a footnote? What?' because confucius dont give a shit about that so it doesn't matter.

All genres can have good works in them though.

At best Xianxia can often be a wonderful interplay of extremely high fantasy abilities and topics and extremely low fantasy characters and plot. It's often sort of the fantasy equivalent to cyberpunk in a weird way. Like in cyberpunk you have the rich and powerful and they may as well be gods compared to everyone else, and they use their power to strangle everyone else and act like spoiled children and hoard all the power and wealth while the protagonists eat mud to survive. Until he gets one small break, some chance to ascend to the realms of the haves vs have nots (and then change fucking nothing because no empathy here).

Replace money with magical power and that is Xianxia. Western fantasy tends to have magic be something you have to learn and which treats people basically equally. Xianxia magic is something you absorb, and you absorb the most by working harder and being richer than other people. People who have talent but no resources die or serve people who have talent *and* resources to hopefully get a slice of the pie.

If I was going to recommend any Xianxia I'd either say a Thousand Li by Tao Wong or Cradle by Will Wight.

The former is pretty much the most generic xianxia story you could have but very competently done. It follows a guy who goes from being the weakest piece of crap to someone who matters slowly but steadily so you understand his journey.

The latter is a westernized version of xianxia that strips out most of the overt chinese-ness and doubles down on the 'look, magical power is a metaphor for wealth' in places too.

Both are like 12 book series long though. Or in Xianxia terms, medium length.

One of the big problems is that the Great Leap Forward butchered pretty much every piece of mythology outside of journey to the west and whatever scattered folklore existed for long enough to be recollected. Likewise famous historical fiction that wasn’t utterly butchered is pretty much limited to romance of the three kingdoms.
Western fantasy might be in an absolutely fucking dire place now due to rampant nepotism and crony hires, but in theory a western writer can pull from over two thousand years of mythology and historical fiction for inspiration. Hell, that’s pretty much exactly what Tolkien did.
The Chinese are effectively in a situation where they have Beowulf and someone welding together Le Morte d’Arthur from Welsh folklore to pull from.

As much as I love Shadow Slave, "sunk cost falalcy" is really the perfect way to put it.

I've been playing a bunch of Jade Empire, hit the imperial city for the first time but I haven't played in a bit. The Divine Extra-Solar Myriad Enhancement bloodline is strong enough that it won't ever truly die out. It has enough of the Dao of Fate in it that it will find a way to survive, even if a young master has to pop into existence from a different timeline.
Failing even that, should it somehow die out, then many alchemists and researchers will study it in the hope that they will be able to infuse the bloodline into their own and reforge their bodies without tedious amounts of body refining cultivation.
