Game Dungeon is the old AVGN style reviews minus the cringe live action parts which were always my complaint of that era. LGR did a good job with his reviews but never went in depth enough.

I don't have any issue with the game-portion of the episode but when I put on the Game Dungeon playlist I always find Battleforge hard to finish, just because it's where Ross first revealed his GAAS-hater power level and his big idea to reach out to EA execs was so naive it was almost cringy. Even at the time I was thinking "do you seriously think literally anything will come of that?"

>>714867757
If the episode is basically just a summary of the game then it better be a fucking weird or interesting game to carry things, like Maabus or Armed and Delirious. Daemonica doesn't look like a bad game or anything I just don't think the episode had anything to say.

I did buy, but ended up getting bored like halfway through. I'd love to see another take on the concept, though, just with more mechanical depth. Maybe have a dedicated healer so the player has more reason to cast spells, and add stuff like damaging zones that you have to move your heroes out of

If someone designed a video-game where the plot was "haha, imagine if you had to defeat enemies by FARTING on them, isn't so funny and gross?", I would not give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe if it was a 2000s studio game, but the fact that it's a 2010s indie game only makes it even more likely

I think I understand him: he likes games where you can immerse yourself in another world but Doom's mapping is too abstract.
So for example, test drive has a bunch of features that look like a real place, while doom has geometry that sorta but not really looks like a space base.
I'm sure he addressed that in an episode but it escapes me right now.

They probably updated the engine which they use for all their games, but did so in a way that made some old stuff break/become incompatible, and instead of fixing it (or, you know, not updating a specific title) they just ignored it. I get wanting a single platform for all games - it must make development way easier - but this is the worst possible outcome. If I had a billion dollars I'd be suing over that

He's not a moron, he's just special. I agree with the core of that video though: an OS should allow the user to customize it extensively, because it's such a fundamental piece of software that can have a huge impact on productivity, and most people are going to have their own quirks that a single layout can't fully appeal to. The world was better when people were in charge of how their software looked

That can be true in a lot of levels and areas. But you cannot satisfy a person like Ross. He will find something to complain about it. Even if that something is insipidly small and irrelevant, he will talk about it like it's "deal breaking". And even, if you fix the deal breaking part.... a couple of months later, he will find that doing X is "not optimal". So, you add two ways to do X better. But no, he doesn't like those either. He wants to make X in THIS way, not in THAT way. So, yes. You make possible to make X in THIS way. Can you guess what happens next? You cannot satisfy a customer like Ross. Not with hardware/software made to be mass-produced.

I don't know, I've read some people bringing this up for the Well of Souls video, saying "oh you didn't do <x>" or something, but... unless his character was supposed to be damaging basic enemies to -500% health by level 3, it makes no sense that basic enemies would take one to two shots and then slightly less basic tougher enemy would take 80. That's not "oh you omitted the fuckle grungle mechanic" stuff, that's shitty Warcraft 3/Oblivion mod territory.

It's also that in Doom there isn't much point in exploration just for the sake of exploration and finding cool things. You'll just find maybe a secret chainsaw or a 4-vertex pillar with a hanging Mussolini corpse in front of it you've seen two rooms prior.

It's one of the reasons he liked Dungeon Siege, no loading screens. Which is such a small thing but it really isn't when you play a game I mean you have to remember until SSDs loading times were over the minute as standard for a lot of games and on console? Far longer.

Even now with an SSD and 1-2 second loading screens it annoys the fuck out of me if there are a lot of them like in a Bethesda game having to go from inside a building, leaving the building, to another building and then back to the original building all for a single quest that's 3-4 loading screens at least and they all slow down my game because now I'm not focused on the game but how to get places with going through the least amount of loading screens possible.

2014-2015 is a near perfect run of episodes.
2016 is also really good with some absolute classics but is also where SKG started forming and while that's a noble endeavor the videos focused on it detract from the year.
2017 was another classic year
2018-2019 was a weaker year
2020-2021 was a bad point overall, you could feel him getting tired of it around that time
Everything since then has averaged out at good but not as good as the peak.

To me Ross is at his best when he is having a minor breakdown over a DOS era computer game where the limited info presented allows his naturally paranoid mind to fill in the gaps.

I think Polaris Snocross was his most hilarious video without a doubt. Him complaining about the game is way less direct and he just makes humorous little observations about it instead. Itโ€™s a very laid back but funny video. Apocalyptica was also great because you could tell just how genuinely overwhelmed he was by it.

Only after making the tierlist did I realize how I have a mainly negative feeling about the majority of the dungeons.
Having watched the top videos probably half a dozen times or more, it makes sense that the Game Dungeon as a whole leaves a much stronger impression in memory than in reality.

That said, even forgettable dungeons are wonderful, if only for one watch.
The real tragedy are the videos on the bottom. Some are mistakes that Ross admits to (Life is Strange, Uncanny Valley), which is fair, but others can make you hate Ross and his infuriating bullheadedness.

>Would you admit it surpassed AVGN
I don't get how people compare these things. You're asking me to rate food analogies and green texts: I can't rate them because I judge them on different criteria. AVGN is about finding shitty games and making fun of them, Game Dungeon is about soulful shitty games and exploring the world. Ross never made fun of a game.

AVGN and Game Dungeon are very different of course, but when people compare them, they're talking about the vibe. They're both very comfy, cozy, and have MASSIVE rewatchability value. I think it's because James and Ross are similar people. They're both Gen X'ers (which makes them unique from largely millennial content creators) who are autistic, charming, and largely disconnected from modern brainrot internet culture. They're wholesome out-of-touch old dudes, which is very precious nowadays

What is editing in this context? Deciding which video clips to play when, or do you mean writing? If you mean video clips part, there's no way it can be that hard. It's just playing gameplay over a voice.
>inb4 you don't know
I made some music videos with gameplay before, that was rough because I had to time it in beat with the song. I don't see that challenge here.

I would pay good money for his Dark Seed II. It's one of the few games I think about a lot, because I rewatched the Restuprae playthrough a bunch of times and ended up playing it myself a couple of times.
What a great train wreck: so many good ideas, ruined by horrible execution. It even predicated the schizo-incel personality with Mike Dawson, getting cucked by everyone in town.

With tier lists I'm always confused/bothered/disagree with the guy's ranking, so I want to highlight what I put and why
>S
I enjoy the game, enjoy Ross's playthrough (like with Well of (((Souls)))) or I enjoy his tangents like The Crew/Deus Ex very much.
>A
S but weak.
>B
It was mostly talking about the game/funny observations, but it didn't go beyond that. Take Gothic: besides him messing up on teachers, it was a standard Gothic video.
>C
B but lesser, and we get more into the "diary of me playing a game" that I dislike.
>D
t's just a diary/game's boring. Like Hinterland seems cool game to play, not to watch.

A big criteria is also cool to boring ratio. I don't remember much in say Black Future, because it was a fundamentally boring game. Daemonica/Journeyman Project if I were to play, would probably be an A or even S tier game for me because it's the type of game I love, but they're not the type that's all that good for watching a guy play.
The best types of games to watch are those that have a lot of great moments that are shitty to get through. Gothos is an example: it seems great but I will need to spend a few weekends to actually see it all, it seems. Ross giving me the highlight reel is exactly what I want.
The point of this list is Echo sucks ass as a game, why are you playing it Ross?

>Fever Dream
The ones I watched when I had the worst fever of my life, it lasted three days and it was me, my dog, and my computer for the most part and while I was shaking and half delirious those videos inspired a sense of joy and fear at the unknown that has stuck with me.
>Great Ross riffing Material
The ones I am drawn back to because I enjoy that that much.
>Ross plays a game
Ross plays a game he completes it and ahs things to say
>Ross cannot make me care
The video is dull and I get nothing out of it
>Ross is bad at games
Ross's inability to process these games correctly makes them almost null
>Barely Recall
Nuff Said
>Proto SKG
These barely count as Game Dungeon for me on account of their primary focus being to voice stuff that would later go on to be SKG.

Also I realized that my least favorite kind of game dungeon on average is "Ross plays a game in the Diablo Lineage" likely because I was on the Bioware side of the RPG spectrum.

The console ones are my favourites, personally. The Sega CD episode is the first one I've seen.
https://youtu.be/FvT8jG1OVdI
https://youtu.be/4yn52NTdV0c Two-parter
https://youtu.be/AknyR-kRvLc This one isn't very informative but has some fun bits
https://youtu.be/g2eH3vYbdGo Has a 32X sequel
And as for some classic non-console-oriented episodes:
https://youtu.be/a4QBeADNM34 Continued in the Cheetahmen episode
https://youtu.be/NEwgFmL31RQ
Absolute peak comfy is probably the Bible Games trilogy:
https://youtu.be/LkNvQYiM6bw
I must say, I don't really care for episodes that feature Mike Matei doing a villain thing while jumping around in a costume that ends with them shitting on each other, like Bugs FUCKING Bunny, Batman, Spiderman or Wizard of Oz.

Half of it was because I forgot about it, half was because it was just the game. Like Rama: the game was great, why shouldn't I go play it instead of listening to Ross summarize it? Or Hinterland/Trickstyle. I didn't put Legend of Kyrandia 2 on there because I don't want to get spoil on another game I'm interested in playing.
>>714917353
I enjoy it as an episode, but again, it's Ross going over a game and not adding much to it. What am I getting from Game Dungeon that I'm not getting from me playing it?
I put Deus Ex in S because he has interesting things to say about Deus Ex. I put Arcade America in S because I enjoy him talking about America. I did not subscribe to "summarize games that I can go easily play" channel.
>>714917598
I enjoy all his videos. If I had to put his videos to most youtubers, every single Ross video would be in B-S tier no question about that. I am comparing Ross to Ross, and Ross's peaks are simply the best.

Action 52 and the Cheetahmen remain a classic. I find there's a sweet spot in AVGN between the rough early episodes and the labored modern ones that is endlessly rewatchable, usually the ones where most of the content is his commentary on the game's flaws.

Polaris Snocross is a comfy one. Test Drive as well.

I also like Battleforge for several reasons. It was one of the first time I heard anyone call out the practice of GaaS but his rants are good too and he wasn't holding back on some of his "edgier" humor.
>it's as if it became socially expected that you cut off one of your fingers every 3 years and feed them to the birds
>it's like a weird etiquette we're following for a prison rape tea-party
>NO, YOU SOUND LIKE A RETARD SAYING THAT. TELL ME ABOUT HOW COOL YOUR GAME IS WHEN IT DIES FOREVER

And then he pulls the rug out and reveals the episode is a double review for another game that's about to die. I also love how he calls out how art directors today suck shit and blast everything with post-process filters and bloom and can't properly light or color a game to save their lives.

Zombie Trailer Park was a really good one. It's essentially a Game Dungeon disguised as a Moon Gaming episode for April Fools. The gimmick of having yourself on your own show never gets old, though I've only seen it executed poorly where that itself is the joke.

>Don't remember
You should rewatch Phantasmagoria because it's a trip. I like Realms of the Haunting and The Secret World too.
>Average
Polaris Snowcross' time travel conspiracy and The Division's secret story don't deserve to be called average. Trackmania is very rewatchable too.

That's probably what will happen. He's more or less the only English speaker in contact with his ECI team so it'd be odd if he just cut all ties with it after the signature deadline and then we're all left wondering what the hell is going on. The least he could do is keep everyone updated.

I never watched his shit because he used to insist that putting shitty headache-inducing blur filters on all his game footage 'improved' it.

For me, it's adventure game episodes. I don't know, I just don't find the fan favourites of Black Mirror, Journeyman Project or the german cave saga thing from developers of Nyet 3 very memorable compared to others.

For me it's the Secret World episode. It was how I discovered him and it's a good video about an underappreciated game.
Also heavily foreshadowed SKG at the end.

Oh, I remember. When the video was released there were a bunch of people who got very mad about Ross talking about his UI tastes because having different tastes than an autist is wrong and stupid for some reason.

I'm reasonably certain that this happens because when you're trying to select text you might accidentally select an image element also, and if there's image data in the clipboard you can't ctrl-v the text.
