At the poison swamp area and its not remotely fun. Your dps depends on learning combos which is weird because you play games to relax not to learn things.

Combos are barebone in this game. Most important skill is usually that phantom skill that triggers on certain attacks while being buffed up. Otherwise spend your points in reflect and counter. Each weapon should also have a skill that does dmg if you brink guard which helps a lot. The game kinda expects that you're able to reflect, counter and brink guard on higher difficulty otherwise you'll have a bad but you can always try to outrun some longer combos which works at least on smaller bosses surprisingly well. Sets are important in this game as some sets can easily double your damage. Use the items you have like anti dot or resistance. They all become theoretically craftable of you find the recipe. Spend some points in endurance to get a good baseline of stamina, strength and vitality to reduce armour weight preferable down to B or A.

Stop playing it like a soulslike. The game wants you to be aggressive.
All the people I've seen with complain about the game try to play it like a gay rollslop. It's the only soulslike where you get rewarded for being ultra offensive, and gives you a ton of tools for that.

Greatsword focuses on charge attacks and most of them take too long to reliable lock enemies till you get Phantom: Night's Veil. This will then do mini hits while you charge so you can keep them in stagger lock as well.
