They wanted to make it more wholesome, and Pauline being on DKs back works better with a smaller character. It will be a soft prequel to Odyssey, Pauline dialogue in that game about a crazy ape will be retconned to mean Void Long, they wont explain Cranky nor his dialogue because he was always meant to break the 4th wall
