Do you need to have played the first game to play the second?

it's a direct sequel

Not really. I never played the first game and i understood the story perfectly. Though the impact of returning characters and some events will be lessened if you didnt play the first game.

No. What's cool about Neo is that the new protagonists are entirely new to the setting. Players new to the series are in exactly the same situation as the player characters. Hype moments are hype whether you are familiar with what is happening or because they are just obviously hype.

The new protagonists have zero personality or character development.

actual speedreader post, the NEO character have more genuine character development than neku did
neku's character basically stopped developing by the end of week 1 in TWEWY

Yes, as long as you're playing on either PC, PS4 or Switch 2 via back compat so you can have a locked 60 experience.

Sort of? Fret doesn't really develop so much as he becomes better understood. I guess if you consider him opening up to people more you could argue that he develops.
Shoka is still the same person she always was but her time with the WT makes her change how she behaves toward them at least.
Rindo gets a good amount of development but its somewhat subtle. His whole thing is not really taking agency or advocating for himself and that changes.

I disagree. Week 1 teaches Neku to care about one other person/the people that are close to him. He still doesn't want to be part of the world as a whole but now he wants someone else to run away from it all with him. Week 2 and 3 are where he learns to accept and care about people in general rather than specific persons.

Not really, week 2 actually gives Neku the perfect nihilistic partner to fuel all his negative beliefs that makes him think if he even agrees with it anymore while week 3 is him fully committing to opening up with beat

I'm sad I missed the threads on release because of my personal hangups with the game. Was going through a rough patch with a friend that I'd spent hours and hours with playing OG TWEWY doing pin evos and talking about the story. Eventually got past it.

You don't *need* to but you're missing a lot by jumping straight into the sequel. I really recommend the first game cause it's one of the best games I've ever played, but with the caveat that I'm only talking about the DS version. All of its various ports are pretty heavily compromised due to the control scheme really not working on other hardware. If you can't play it on DS/an emulator I might honestly recommend just checking out the anime adaptation. It loses a lot of the charm but it'll get the most important things about the characters and story across at least.
