Its a good game but its overrated because its babies first story game -- millenials were young when it dropped and because nintendo didnt really have a lot of story driven games back then it stood out plus, there was a lot of sentimental themes like childhood friends and stuff which tug at the plsyer emotionally, and legitimately the music and art design hold up.

Although it is just one of several oot formula games not really any more special than mm, ww, or tp, and the story -- peter pan visits sad villages to hear their sob stories and collect macguffins has been executed better since then not just in the zelda series either.

the game is for kids aged 6 and up with enough depth to story even adults can enjoy it while playing with their kids. If you were around 9 years old when it came out then it was the best game ever made at the time.

playing it after Link to the Past is a real eye opener. it's the first zelda game which has an actual story, characters and a world. for most people this would be their first real video game story and the first video game world they got into.
even as someone who only played it for the first time last year, it's easy to see why it was so impactful. i don't think it's very good in a vacuum though, and Majora's Mask is a better game.

Its STILL one of the few pure hero stories in videogames.
Because every modern game needs to subvert expectations or have an antihero.
Add to that, every aspect of the game is at least good to great in terms of craftsmanship, and its obvious why its universally loved.
