Is it even possible to build a modern gaming PC for under $700?
You should have bought video cards when they were dirt cheap from second hand miners I got a 6600xt for $100 in 2022 and itโs still working perfectly

>>714905093I buyed boughten a prebuilt with a 4070 for $1,200 and I've been pleased with it. Was basically the same as buying the parts at the time (IIRC it was like $20 more) and I did very much appreciate just going straight to getting the OS sorted and my shit installed rather than hooking everything up. Was still more than I wanted to spend but since AI porn's got me by the balls ATI was out of the question and the regular 4070 seemed like the sweet spot for 12gb vram and them fuckin cudas. As much as I considered a 4070 ti super it would've been a few hundred more and I'm still not sure if that would have opened up new avenues of AI porn or if it just would've let me gen it a few seconds faster, it's possible it would be a world of difference for AI video gen but I haven't been impressed enough with that to care
>>714904689 (OP)The point of PC gaming is that you spend more upfront, then pirate everything to save money in the long run. And when it's time to upgrade you can save some money by reusing any hardware that you can carry over. Consoles have always been cheaper upfront and more convenient, but the games were more expensive and the platform is more limiting.
>>714906453You can buy 2 Nintendo Switch and a PS5 disc drive for the price of your PC build with cash to spare. To put into perspective how expensive PC gaming has become.
Why do consoletards pretend that PCs are just more expensive consoles that cant do anything besides play dedicated games.
>>714906545I could. But I don't want to
>>714906545PC gaming has always been more expensive then an analogue console for gaming only, literally in every point in history, a PC+GPU(only needed for vidya) has always cost more
>>714904689 (OP)a mid level gaming pc is significantly more powerful than a console.
you can build some cheap shit for $800 easily.
>>714906771PC gaming has become expentionally more expensive. In the 2010s you could easily make a case for a 350-450 PC build. Even prebuilts for 500 dollars. But that is not the case anymore, hasn't been for years. A single PC component like the GPU could cost you 400 dollars and that's 8GB VRAM.
>>714904689 (OP)Assuming "mid-level" means that you're able to run new games at 1080p / 60 fps, sure. A second hand 4060 is like $250? Don't really need a beastly CPU to go with that. Rest is whatever. If 1440p is mid-level then fuck no.
>>714906804lol no you can't but this type of napkin math is pervasive in people who haven't built a gaming PC in a while and have no idea what real world PC parts or prebuilts cost.
I see RTX 4060s/5060s for as high as 1000 dollars in prebuilds all the time. Which is robbery for that type of entry level GPU at 8GB.
>>714904689 (OP)With a 9060 XT, yes.
>>714906872No, back in 2012 or whenever the fuck you are referencing, you couldnโt buy a PC for $500 or build one from BRAND NEW parts, but that is easily possible noawadays if you just observe the trends in component prices and buy second hand from local retards, of course a brand new PC for playing your shotty AAA from Bethesda (A Zenimax Company) will cost you $1500-2000 dollars because of GPU prices for brand new chips being high but that doesnโt count the millions of GPUs available second hand
>>714904689 (OP)but what are the games?
I'm about to switch over to a gaming handheld and be done with rigs
gaming just ain't that good anymore to dump more than $100 into PC hardware over a 5-6 year period when games release so poorly optimized
pc gaming is a scam
it takes over $1000 in 2025 to have the same performance as a $450 console from 2020
even if you get the same specs as a ps5 you'll have worse performance on pc because games aren't optimized for a specific build, so your pc needs to bruteforce as much as it can
>>714906473you pay more upfront, then cry about games having denuvo and devs making live service slop so you can't pirate them
A 2080 build will be more powerful than the base PS5 in your price range
>>714904689 (OP)No. But unlike consoles, you're generally only replacing individual components every few years, rather than paying for an online subscription *and* every new gen of console from a particular brand. It's still more expensive though.

>>714909496>you spend $500 on a console and can take for granted every game running fine for the next 5-7 yearsEhh. Which honestly could have been avoided if console games had graphics settings, even just one basic one, like if you could choose between prettier graphics, or targeting a specific fps instead. But on consoles, when a dev makes a pretty game with frequent fps drops into the teens, you can't fix that. I don't see any reason it shouldn't be possible to add a setting. If a game runs like shit on my PC, I just stop trying to run everything on high graphics.

I can get a mid PC for $200-$300 and have access to literal tens of thousands of both PC and console games
It's only if you want to play the newest games that you have to pay thousands.

>>714904689 (OP)I'm currently playing the GT4 Spec II mod on my $1300 PC. I also work at home as a graphic designer and use this as my main work station PC. Last month I played E33, did a Stalker: GAMMA run, Metroid Prime with KBM controls, and finished a run of the fan translated Tales of Destiny Director's Cut that never released in North America.
Can I keep doing this if I trade my PC in for a PS5?
So I guess I want a RTX 4070 Ti Super
Real question. I'm wanting to get a completely new computer sometime next year. I'm going to wait until I have $10,000 saved up. What will I be able to get with that amount?
pic unrelated.
>>714904848Based. FUCK Switch 2.
My PC pays itself off after a single paycheck. Can your console do that?

>>714919620With $10K you are pretty much open to anything in the normal retail market. There are some ultra high end parts which you won't need but you can easily get the best GPU, Intel/AMD CPU, MB and load up on RAM. You could cut the budget in half to $5,000 and still have a better PC than 95% of the board.

>>714905567It can get expensive if you buy every game in existence
It's understandable that console gamers won't have issues paying for their games, since they get one game annually. 100 dollars a year isn't that bad after all. Although you will end up paying the console's worth to use your own internet to download the games you bought physical copies for.

You don't see it, but your brain does. And you don't want to be "mid-level gaming" on your PC on your "mid-level" gaming PC.
I own a PS5 Pro, Switch 2 and an old ass non-gaming laptop. I too have been weighing whether it's worth it to splurge and build a gaming PC. I have owned a workstation, but never a dedicated gaming PC and the component pricing is pretty grim. I came up with $4k parted out (with a nice monitor). I still want one, though it's just hard to justify rationally. Also, PS5 Pro gets way too much forced hate.
>>714912912You typically never want to be playing on performance modes even with a PS5 Pro, it's objectively a disgusting experience visually. Unless you are willing to make the game look like it's full of mud and have constant pop-ins quality modes are the only realistic choice most of the time. Performance modes also typically don't stay stable 60, they're constantly dropping below 40, and balanced modes are never a stable 40, it's always dropping. Both modes are pointless even including on a PS4 Pro.
>>714904689 (OP)You cannot because the discrete GPU market is completely fucked up. AMD and NVIDIA operate as a cartel: they both stopped producing last gen cards at the same time and AMD delayed their launch until after NVIDIA. AMD could have launched before NVIDIA with a bunch of cards in a market with no competition. AMD choose not to. AMD does not give a fuck about gaining market share. AMD and NVIDIA cards are being sold over 70% over cost. Components like motherboards or cases have like 10-15% margins.
