>>714922446It's not about gameplay. It's about the feeling. A game can play shitty but still be a captivating narrative experience. DMC never reached those MGS highs. The comparison to MGR is just accidental to the gameplay, which is entirely irrelevant to the plot.
MGSV is a really fun game, but fails in that regard, while MGS4 somehow succeeds while being a pain in the ass and a lot of NANOMACHINES since it still is about ideas. MGSV has some ideas too but you can notice that the ideas are all jumbled and confused since Konami was messing with Kojima. Say about DS1 what you want but it still has that vibe. Is it his best game? No. Did he make the best games by himself? No, he is not the sole creator of the initial "Kojima" feeling. But he expanded on it decently.
MGR just did it better when it comes to a cool video game relevant to its time (the 2010s). MGS4 happened at the tail end and MGSV wasn't really part of any conversation. MGS2 set that tone perfectly and is probably the game of the 2000s for that. MGS3 was narratively a direct sequel to MGS2 as a prequel and continues its plot even though it's setting SEEMS less relevant and somehow independent from MGS2.
