Why isn't Splatoon more popular in the west? Japan adores it.

The western fanbase is full of child molestation victims who spam lgbt messages in the game.

A.) It's an online third-person console shooter with a gimmick that ultimately feels very constrained due to lack of options when it comes to multiplayer settings, whereas any big FPS (Doom, Quake, Team Fortress 2 arguably) have existed since forever, have a fuckton of mods, can host their own servers, etc. Splatoon's even beat out by the likes of Goldeneye and Timesplitters 2 when it comes to console shooters and multiplayer options.
2.) The online focus is really probably only taking Japan's internet infrastructure into account. The playerbase in NA and maybe certain parts of EU is hampered by much poorer overall internet.
3.) Similar to above, merchandising and the like only treats Japan as a first-class citizen, and perhaps reasonably so.
4.) Arguably, Splatoon IS still popular in the west, but only for it's "lore" (which isn't that great and grows less consistent with each game) and people making art and tumblr OCs. Tons of people who love the characters and world built around the game but don't care for the game itself.

Nobody talks about Roblox, Fortnite, or Five Nights at Freddy's here, but those are all very popular games (with generations of people too young to be here).
