Hades could be an example. People were excited prelaunch, cause of the devs. Then it was announced it would be a timed Epic exclusive for early access, and hype and interest instantly died. After hitting 1.0 and releasing on Steam, became popular.

Valve was on their website for years, making Concord at Home: We Remembered to Pay the Shills Edition wasn't really a surprise to me.

Shame its so ugly, every other hero shooter is some 80 iq snoozefest in comparison. If someone could steal the hero gameplay and put it in something that isn't a 6v6 esports creep farming pit of hell it would probably be pretty fun.

As a former OW T500 that has played Deadlock... Overwatch is HOTS and Deadlock is DOTA2. Overwatch only requires you to play the objective and had good positioning and le 'game sense'. Deadlocks demands mechanical skill and pace and economy control on top of what OW demands.

tl;dr
Overwatch is a baby game compared with Deadlock. Deadlock is Gran Turismo and Overwatch is Mario Kart.

That game was late to the party by at least 7 years.
Supposing it released before overwatch, it might have actually been a trend setter, but I think it just wouldn't have had the staying power, seeing as the characters in Deadlock are neither funny and videomaker material like those of TF2, nor attractive enough for all the degens

That said, I wouldn't call the game dead when it's not even released, but looking at how bad the hype for it died down, I wouldn't hold my breath expecting it to be a success either.

It'll probably have a niche sweatlord audience for about a year, maybe even hold a tournament or two, but I am not expecting most casuals to enjoy it, since mobas and competitive shooters these days are just not fun anymore, they're all about "climbing", "ELO" and trying hard, which simply isn't an option for most people who aren't unemployed or below 25
