It's less that it's difficult to understand and more that the lowest common denominator refuses to engage with the game on a level beyond the surface. It's rough, in some ways intentional and other ways not but it's clear you'd have to be actively rejecting the game's narrative to pretend that it's nothing but nonsense. I watched some longass video on Eat Standing and there was a bunch of interesting imagery and ideas (dead people eventually turning into antimatter nukes is a horrifying idea) but the actual plot and the way things were tied together was a bunch of absolute wank.

I think it's interesting that Sam's DOOMS power may not even be something he notices. I think that his power allows him to connect with other versions of himself, which is how we get to see each other's creations when hooked into the Chiral Network and why during boss fights statuelike Sam clones with other player names will throw you stuff to help you with. His existence in part due to being a repatriate seems to have a ripple effect if we assume the multiplayer aspects to be canon

America doesn't use Imperial. During the Treaty of the Metre, of which the USA was one of the first to adopt, America tweaked its customary measurement system to convert between old British Units and Metric smoothly. The US was in the middle of the expansion to the western frontier, so getting everyone to adjust at that point was impossible, and the US was being considerate of all of the other countries that had yet to adopt Metric.
After waiting decades for everyone else to catch up, America stuck with its unique combined system of both measurements.

The Base 10 of Metric, as clean and useful for scientific precision it may be, is less efficient compared to the highly composite, fraction-based measurements that use things like Base 12 and Base 60 for everyday things.
