my game theory goes a little something like this
kris is repeatedly shown to feel uncomfortable in their own skin (they actively try to avoid looking at pictures of other humans, most mirror flavor text is self-deprecating, etc.), they've grown distant with their only real friend other than susie and their home life is a complete mess
given that the soul is meant to be the culmination of one's own self and that the cage has seen a lot of abuse over the years, i think it's not unreasonable to assume kris has been tearing their own soul out as a means of self harm (or more aptly, a literal rejection of themselves)
