No that was XV with its wildly inconsistent theme. Who at Square Enix thought it would be a good idea to make a "modern" FF game. It just looks weird.

I've genuinely tried to play and beat this game 6 times over the years and never got much further than when you get to the bunny lady village. The story is just so dull and I'm not invested in any of the characters. I just don't "GET" this final fantasy.

Setting is cool but it has pacing issues, the characters are a bit unengaging compared to goats like Cloud, Squall, Terra and Cecil and overall the overall presentation suffers from poor exposition making it hard to stay engaged.

I distinctly remember how I mentally checked out when my airship couldn't go to a place because *magic*. Poor exposition made it feel like a cop out. Furthermore, the airship itself was poorly displayed, making it feel like I just got teleported to a new stage.

Also the game feels grindy somehow for no fucking reason.

They didn't fix shit you stupid fucking secondary, they simply ported the best version aka IZJS to the west called it a day. Oh and also made the game easier by gimping most enemies and changed the loot table to reward players tier 5 armor on the second fucking map of the game.

Now when I think of it, a lot of it is also just Vaan being a dog shit mc. Compared to Tidus, Vaan just doesn't have have any chemistry with the cast. He has a lot of fundamental issues as a vehicle for the story. Meanwhile, Tidus who is very similar to Vaan, has everything he needs to carry his own game and the difference shows in the beat to beat scenes the viewer has to look through.

Overall I think Vaan would have needed:
>Slight redesign. Less babyfaced, more defined shoulders and he should have gone entirely topless because his little vest thing looks ridiculous.
>His role as the oldest orphan should have been more clearly exposed at the start. He needed a more clearly defined heroic trait.
>At the same time, he should have been more nefarious. His heroic trait should have been a vehicle for his negative trait. The early story should have leaned more into him being a streetrat hustler and thief.
>This in turn should have better informed the viewer why he engaged with Ashe. He would have had a clearly stated goal of believing that engaging with Ashe would have improved the standings of those he cared about (the orphans).

Also the story needed less empirewank. Larsa unfortunately muddied the waters too much.

Nah, classes 100% improved the game because otherwise you'd just make the same OP character with all the available licenses sans summons.

Vanilla FF12 has zero depth or player choice in terms of character leveling and soloing the whole game with three characters was way too common. Classes kind of force you to at least have some variety.

>Bought this and 9 on steam this summer sale
>Started playing 9 (Memoria) while I was waiting for the rest of the games to finish downloading
>It crashes randomly during combat and after a while I've just given up for now (I'm stuck trying to find the black mage hideout in the forest since the game keeps crashing)
>Decide to try FF12 and then go back and play FF9 once I find a way for it to stop fucking crashing
>Play all the way up to reaching the "sky kingdom" for the first time and I'm bored out of my mind

I like the combat and the Gambit system (which is a controversial opinion I guess) but the game is so piss easy that I've only died once so far and that was simply because I took the bait right at the start of the game and tried to kill the T-rex right outside the city.
FF9 has so far been harder (although, not much harder) and I'm starting to think that it might not just be 9 and 12 that are easy but every other game in the series, it's borderline Kirby's Epic Yarn levels of easy to the point where I think that I might only be able to finish 9 since 12s story feels like its spinning its wheels constantly.

>they simply ported the best version aka IZJS to the west called it a day.
haha... no. IZJS is not TZA. IZJS only lets you have one job. TZA is literally twice as easy as IZJS because it lets you choose two jobs, which lowkey defeats the purpose of having limited skills per character. and IZJS is already easier that Vanilla. "just pick one job in TZA" doesn't work because that way you have even less skills than IZJS because TZA was built differently.

>>714960276
>Nah, classes 100% improved the game because
Anons have been saying this for literall 15+ years only to be corrected. yes it sounds good but it doesn't work because it was an afterthought and the game is not balanced around it. There is a reason IZJS was japan exclusive. it's not very good.
>Vanilla FF12 has zero depth or player choice
Vanilla is literally the most challenging and deep FF. unironically. this is not a matter of opinion. this is not me trying to fight you. your characters have stats even though you cannot see them. Basch will always be a tank and a bad mage. Van will always be the agility fighter. Asch will never be a good melee fighter. etc etc. So even though you have the choice of all skills for all characters it doesn't matter.
>>714960752
>Then play on New Game Minus?
you guys are clearly dying to defend the new version I guess because it's on steam. but that makes no sense. why invent retarded ways to make the game harder when i can play the best version that doesn't have a butchered OST on top? why jump through hoops when i can play the best version with one fucking click.

I have been typing this shit for 15 years.

yes because it's the most pointlessly easy FF. you literally don't even have to change and optimize your gambits throughout the game which is the point of the fucking battle system. lol

>why invent ways to game harder?

Bro your argument doesn't even make sense. On one hand you argue that TZA is too easy compared to the original while on the other habd you refute the argument that TZA has a "hardcore" difficulty

Also:

Gee, why would I pick the "hard" difficulty in any game?
Anonymous No.714961515 [Report] >>714961734
>>714960961
Thats the thing, the combat system is fun to play around with and Gambit has some interesting choices to be made... At least that was until I realized that just letting my characters auto-attack everything to death was an entirely viable option and the Gambits so far has only been used for me to streamline combat by pretty much only using:
>If HP 30%=<, use Potion on ally
>If KO, use Phoenix down on ally
>If Poisoned, use Antidote on ally

The rest I've handled in real time through the action menus although I barely have any actions to preform, yet at least, both because I haven't really learned any yet and because I haven't encountered a single enemy that can't just be mowed down with auto-attacks yet.

you refuse to understand that im literally trying to give you guys good advice. yes having to choose roles sounds good but it doesn't work because the game was not built around that idea. i have been typing this for litelleraly 15 fucking years when anons were begging for a western post of IZJS. it breaks the game. you played a broken game. and TZA is even worse than IZJS.

>add even more "buy the guide, bitch" moments that outdo Zodiac Spear from vanilla (fucking INVISIBLE CHEST with RNG spawn and RNG item drop)
>breaks the game's balance by giving you double stats through two classes (instead of one like in IZJS) even though the original wasn't that hard outside of side-quests and hunts
>Espers are still fucking useless even after the buffs (at best you'll use Belias during early game but that's it)
I think I'd quit the series if I bothered to play X-2 on release (watched the plot summary many years later and it was awful) but it was XII that made me quit FF. And it's probably for the best.

How about the Tactics games? After looking through all of the FF games I sort of got stuck at those ones since they seem to have the more "involved" combat systems, there has to be one (1) game that isn't so easy that you fall asleep during combat right? I'm not even asking for DaS levels of difficulty here (even though the souls series is pretty easy) I just want literally any FF game that isn't made for 12yr olds.

Yeah obviously I don't understand that you are trying to give *good* advice when the advice is stupid. It seem like if I want a challenge, going NG- is obviously the better choice. Your analysis of the game in other words seem poor and forced, as you are championing some sort of contrarian purist stance that requires conviniently ignoring the fact that the newest version of the game actually lets the player fine tune the difficulty.

Tl;dr you've had a stupid take for 15 years so no shit no one ever listens to you

IMO I just think that japs are bad at making hard vidya with a few exceptions. They are good at making grindy vidya that is just meant to waste your time but the only japanese games I've ever felt had a decent difficulty curve is the Souls series and arguably Touhou.

I have no clue why so many people think any of the JRPGs are any good when they all pretty much play the same, are all piss easy and are all designed to waste your time in some way, I guess the power of middling quality writing really is enough for a lot of people.

But that is what FF always has been as a franchise. Not that it seems to make a difference. FF16 is the first main FF ever to get an M rating, but it won't give you much of a challenge either.
