the obsession with 4K is dumb, you cannot run it natively at that price tag so it's a fake experience.
just invest in a machine that will run everything maxed out at 2K, you physically do not need anything more than that.

if you're talking about a 10 year long stopgap, sure
the hardware required to natively output 4K today just isn't economically feasible, which is why the 5090 is so comically expensive. I would even go as far as to say the 5080 isn't a proper 4K card.

nah, I choose my components and then paid for assembling service. Quite a lot of my friends had to return their hardware cause it came with broken/bent pins or didn't work at all, why would you subject yourself to that if you can just throw money at someone and tell them that it's their problem, you just want your box working

as much as I hate apple I have to admit they have a genius level marketing.
Not a single other company would be able to get away with as much shit as they do. However apple is going to win in the long race as tech literacy is getting worse and worse, as the favor goes to more dumbed down, flashy icons and words. Its the same what happened to mobiles when smartphones came out.

Nearing the point where I pull the trigger to be honest. I have an AM4 board from my previous PC that I'm going to reuse. With that in mind I'm thinking of maybe pairing a 5600 up with a 9060 xt. Bearing in mind I just casually play single player games at 1080p. I reckon that set up will do me 5 - 7 years maybe. Any thoughts?

I think that air-cooling has seen a tiny popularity boost - a veeeery tiny one - because of how often people see SFF content creators using low profile Chinesium coolers on things like the 9800X3D.
Partial pre-builts (like that NR200 SKU that comes with a PSU and an AIO) are a thing now, but they're mostly for people who don't want to tinker/do too much research.
Other than that, I can't think of anything else that's fundamentally changed much.
New people still go for overkill AIOs, etc. etc. etc.

it feels like moore's law dying is more a symptom of this golden goose LLM dogshit running down the industry though. having two gimmicky economic bubble-like moments hit the tech industry back-to-back, after a global pandemic held back the semiconductor industry for years seems like the perfect recipe to enable stagnation and pivots that wreck the idea of making our technology meaningfully more powerful.

A few reasons
Nvidia abandoned gaming in 2020 and never looked back
4K monitors with high refresh rates are expensive and poorly supported (even cables are hard to source)
The industry itself gave up on actually trying to do 4K and went for AI upscaling and interpolation
Several places, namely California, put outright bans on maximum power draw on new PCs. 4K regularly blows past it with the GPU alone
Game studios are imploding under the cost of 4K content creation
