I think the glut of mainstream social deduction games have given so many more viable alternatives to broad audiences that people have either moved on or not bothered to engage with SS13's hyper-autismo.

I haven't played in years but I went to download BYOND a few weeks back and found out it was being DDOSed by a some guy wanting it to become public or something.

A large part of combat was being able to body block people, either cornering them in maints or blocking their way through a door, etc. Space was limited, you could only fit so many niggas in a room before things got stupid, now you can just have ten seccies packed together like sardines in a space that would normally only fit three. Everyone slides past each other like a sack of marbles, there's no presence or weight anymore. Trying to move through doorways is also a major bitch, feels like I'm drunk and trying to fit my keys in the hole, I just keep bumping my hitbox against the sides until I manage to squeeze through. NTA. I don't really get this? If you have loads of people crammed in a tight space that's how it should exactly feel and play. SS13 is a silly game, but basic grounding elements like that helps to enable the RP experience and make the silly elements comparatively more impactful. Like how the Wizard is fundamentally funny because it's just a generic fantasy mad wizard with no sci-fi attachments like a game such as Mass Effect has to make it feel less out of place just plopped onto an otherwise consistently sci-fi space station.

Everyone moved to SS14.

SS13 was on the decline for years. I started playing it back in 2010-2011 when Goonstation was huge. Fell in love with it before I eventually graduated and had to get a job. Looking back at it, the only reason you'd get banned was OOC metagaming, ERP, and griefing but last week my younger cousin got banned for failing to heal someone as a doctor because he was "on break."

ss13 is still gatekept by byond (probably for the better) but all of its communities are hyper niche and have little overlap since the servers are so differet. ssethtide among other big publicity things attracted players and devs who just want TTT and without really good design direction, admins, and a decent playerbase it won’t be a good social deduction game

ss14’s official servers runs into pretty much all of the same problems on top of being excessively woke to the point it saturates too deeply and takes away from actually making the game and experience fun.

Lots of shitcode additions (like limb damage and various antags) and a different philosophy towards game balance (in other words, fun is allowed). mostly wrangling. the project management was mostly people that had contributed a good deal and would be unlikely to have a violent meltdown. there were lots of annoying and overly specific discussions about what was and wasn‘t enforcable from the administrative side of things to the point our rules were becoming miles long with lengthy and contradictory edge cases being cited for nonsense that didn’t really matter. for some reason everyone thought just throwing twice as many admins at the problem would solve all of the admin related issues we were having and the reality was our headmin was being too autistic about making everything black and white to the point nobody wanted to do anything because the book to do it by was ten chapters long
I never got involved in the code too much because I couldn’t be assed to learn it and having to have all the PRs reviewed was too different then what I was used to which was just pushing whatever I wanted to my ss13 server. the admin team frequently failed to communicate with maintainers though which often resulted in admins doing things for behaviors that should have just been hotfixed or programmed out or changed in design.
the only other thing we dealt with was the hub servers and that was just nonstop issues from russian servers and interserver drama
