1. they completely ignore texturing and go for that cutesy faux retro corporate look
2. devs don't have the skill to do good abstract texture work and painted on lighting.
there has been some good stuff here and there though.

It's difficult in that grey area where it constantly jumps between "this is really difficult but the loss was my fault, I needed to take more care since checkpoints are few and far in between" and "FUCKING OFFSCREEN SHITSCANNERS HITTING ME THROUGH WALLS" and "damn this is fun not being coddled by a metroidvania" and "WHO'S THE TRIPLE NIGGER WHO CAME UP WITH THIS FINAL BOSS"
But the thing that really bothered me was that there was loads of backlash against the difficulty and they really nerfed it by having a checkpoint roughly every 30 seconds of progress, just felt really cheap.
