I grew up playing Digimon World for the PS1 and I played Digimon World Next Order when it came out on PS4. The one game in the series I haven't played is Re:Digitize. Is that one worth playing? And I assume the 3DS version is better than the PSP one?

Yes, this one has more mons and other improvements over the psp version. Just get the English patch somewhere if you need it.

the game is quite shit but there's not much to chose from
just keep in mind that the game is quite linear in terms of power level so when your mon dies, you just train him as much as possible and continue the story
and also that the arena is not balanced in the slightest and you'll have to trial and error to figure out what is doable or not

what I mean is that in contrast to DW1 where you unlock things as you go and you explore around, here you just follow the story and enemy power level goes up linearly with it so when your digimon dies, there's nothing to do other than get him to a level where you left out, once you reach ultimate for example, there's no content for anything underneath really so anything below the current story level is useless if that makes sense

cybersleuth is not a particularly good RPG, wouldn't really recommend to start if you don't like digimon going into it, it's a very budget and repetitive video game but you can just play them
time stranger is probably the best way to get into it if you don't mind waiting a couple of months
I would recommend digimon world 1 but it can be hit or miss to some people, idk if you'd like it

>>715007257
depends on what you're looking for
>loads of text. unskippable cutscenes (there's a mod for that though)
>plot doesn't kick off until last third of the games
>difficulty is meh. normal is a snoozefest. hard quickly becomes pierce2win
>had the most fun assembling parties. not grindy at all thanks to tactician USBs and platinumshitmons. you can disable encounters later on even
it scratches the monster collector itch decently
>Is there somewhere better to start?
it all depends on what you're looking for. if you want a card game, digital card battle is pretty fun. decks are very flexible (e.g. kamikaze crash deck, fast attack red/black deck, unkillable blue deck, milling deck)
you've also got a retelling of adventure for PSP
and last but not least you can try your hand at the monster raising rpgs (world 1, decode, next order), where you progress is marked by upgrades since your digimon have (extendable) lifespans

If you're comfortable with the grind of Monster Rancher you'll be fine with the CS and HM. They're cheap nowadays and they're decent enough monster catching RPGs compared to a lot of the competition out there. Also, HM isn't a prequel, it's a sequel happening at the exact same time as CS and explains almost none of the events of CS because you're expected to have played CS first.

Are there any "good" Digimon fangames or mods? As far as I've seen there's only one "good" mod for World 1 and 2 each.
The average Digimon game's quality is so low I can't imagine it's that hard to make something equally as good.

the game only has some steam during one of the early chapters, not to say much because the very little the game has to offer is spoiler territory

you walk your guys forward and press their strongest attack, there is type effectiveness yes, that's the length of its depth

Yeah, Digimon World games are V-pet-inspired adventure games, except for all the ones between world 1 and re:digitize). Story games on the other hand (including some of the DS games localized in the west as Digimon World games) are more traditional RPGs.

just 2 different gameplay formulas. you can't say they're completely divorced or that they happen in the same world
>DW2 is a sequel to DW1 (file island and the same jijimon appear) despite having completely different gameplay. mameo from DW1 also appears in next order
>the story RPGs have very little to do with each other. you'll find some allusions and/or cameos here and there (e.g. the tamer union DWDS, dawn/dusk, and lost evolution, sayo in cyber sleuth) but no overlaps with the main story
>characters from both formulas appear in each other's games (e.g. mirei appears in re:digitize and decode, next order, and cyber sleuth. rina appears in decode, cyber sleuth, and next order)

Not really. Digimon Story is split into two parts, the DS games and the Cyber Sleuth/Hacker's Memory continuity. Digimon World doesn't really have any consistency, though Next Order is set after World 1 I guess.

They're two different gameplay styles once they get past the PS1 with the sole exception of a PS2/GC game. World 1 is what the World formula is which is training up a Digimon in realtime battles and helping them eat or poop as you explore the world and recruit people in your world. World 2 and 3 are monster collecting JRPGs which are what Story games are now. World 4 is a dungeon crawling ARPG.

the main thing I hate is the game locks you out of progressing until you advance the story. nothing worse than exploring with your digi only to find an NPC that stops you at the gate of a new area, if the gate isn't closed outright
DW1 had absolutely no roadblocks at all. the grand canyon's invisible bridge barely counts since it's unlocked by talking to yuramon after the bridge is rebuilt (which you see on the way back). from that point onward, the entire map is open (including mt. panorama if you're masochistic enough to journey the other way across the entire map)

Nah, the DS games are one long continuity. The events of Digimon World DS are directly linked to Dawn/Dusk, there's recurring characters and factions, exact same areas reappear, and so on. It even has recurring side characters that hang around the hubs and tournament areas.

Yeah that's kinda what I expected when all the previews hyped it as a "mature narrative experience." Translation: you're gonna click through 50 lines of high school drama, some kid will cry, someone else will blow themselves up, and your Agumon will still be stuck waddling 3 tiles per turn with a single blast move. The type advantage stuff is there but it's baby's first Fire Emblem tier. Only interesting thing is when digivolutions switch types/stats and you can kinda break fights if you prep ahead - not that the game ever gets hard enough to make it matter.

it's firmly entrenched in the dark area. a sea of damaged data and digital scraps. a cesspit of forgotten, rejected, and hate-filled messages deep within the confines of the digital world, slowly leaking and polluting the pristine surface area above, slowly corrupting it, until it starts withering away the landscape.

I don't know about Super Xros Wars, but World DS, Dawn/Dusk and Lost Evolution are all a through line. Even for minor things like how there's one lady you can find in the tournament spectators at the start of Dusk who's fangirling about Beelzemon that you can find in Lost Evolution later on in the game.

I have screenshots of me with all the medals from DW1 on my laptop, I can't bother to send it back to my pc, it was a tremendous amount of time spend, even with speed up. It took me one to two weeks. The last medal was naturally the raising all digimons one. You eventually complete the baby, in-training, rookie and ultimate digimons before you complete the champions one, so what ended up happening was that I have to feed the later and remaining digimons the devil chips to accelarate their deaths. I think my last one was mojyamon or coelamon, I honestly don't remember.

it casualizes the game a tad (e.g. increased base lifespan to 20 days, monochromon minigame bit goal lowered, patches that make bonus try slots easier), but most changes are welcome
>built-in fixes for glitches like giromon's jukebox glitch
>removes number of techs bonus requirement to make evos stop overlapping
>nerfs oppressive techs and buffs weak ones
>fixes tech learning to have equal chances across the board, no matter the specialty slot
>having alternate starters is cool
>item distribution is altered so that you can find items that aren't dishimushrooms more often
>enemies get different stats and loadouts depending on their supposed strength. some are given techs that only one-time bosses used to have
>adds a few unused areas to back dimension

>units with an attribute weakness take 1.5x damage
>stacks with all other multipliers (positioning, support, critical)
>attacks that always hit from behind ignore blocking and stack with the attribute modifier, so it ends up being a 3.75x base damage frontstab nuke
>AoE applies buffs per target hit, meaning units with large AoE like wargreymon can get 4 buff stages in one attack (I think that's 50% extra dmg)
>a few units combine all of the above to absolutely rape data attribute mons, to the point where they need achromatic crystals to not die
if you're talking about elements alone, it's workable but it's clear that balance is heavily skewed in favor of darkness types (all holy mons take extra damage from them). the lack of STAB hurts it in my opinion (passives and a few skills like dinorexmon's grant element attack bonuses)
