I like to think the watchers are actually the 80% ugliest humans who were essentially rendered invisible and intangible to the elites using a global interdiction so the people sexy enough to be video game characters could ignore them forever, while the watchers just watched like a bunch of gondolas
everything else that happens in the games is a consequence of basically erasing the majority of the human race, from making up disasters like "white chlorination syndrome" to explain where all the humans went, to the occasional non-watcher discovering that all the floating platforms and other magic shit are actually being moved around by the watchers like an entire species of kurokos putting on a show for the bishounen to perform and the watchers to be entertained by, resulting in them trying to actually see the watchers and causing the interdiction to respond to their awareness with increasing levels of violence and duplicity, ultimately turning the person trying to see through the veil into a grotesquerie queen
